the day this thing arrived (very early morning) I swore I'd have it set up, plugged in and on the net before Andrew arrived home from work. (What can I say, guess I was out to prove something *G*). I wasn't even sure which button switched it on, I simply picked the biggest one and hoped for the best, LOL. That's pretty much been the way of things ever since. We have all the manuals and *men* (throwing a wink in Tim's direction and an even bigger one to Andrew) like to tell me to read them. Well, I don't think I have time for that, ;) I'm way too busy being on the net or just using the computer figuring stuff out as I go. ;-))) Seriously though some people learn best by "doing" (I'm one of them) and some things lend themselves better to learning "on the job" - computers definitely fall into that category. If you do a random mini survey of those that are "high up and know what's what" with things computer I'll make a bet that you'll find the majority started into computers just because they enjoyed it and were mucking around. In the not so distant past I couldn't even figure out how to copy and paste stuff or how to save things to a file in my own computer, but I played and tried things and now I'm always looking for new and interesting stuff. Daniel is just the same and his ability (at twelve) is awesome to behold, he's at a point now where he can teach his parents a thing or two - that's all from hands on experience. When it comes to computers we need to be more like kids and not be scared to explore and play around. :) This morning I was reading a book (I actually bought it a year ago for Daniel bu I seem to refer to it more) on basic stuff about writing HTML, there was something I've been trying to figure out for a while now and as always... it's the simple things that can defeat us. Now I know how to do it so I'll pop it in the header in which I want it but my guess is that if anyone, who understands such things, were to take a look at how my code looks in all its naked glory they'd either be affronted or fall off their seats laughing but I don't care, I get there in the end. :) One of the things I sometimes do (tip from a lovely friend :) is to check the message source of web pages that I like or am curious about. This is pretty simple to do, I can right click with my mouse and select "view message source" or it can be found as an option under the view menu. What you are then looking at is how the page was actually created (give it a whirl here on chatabox if you like, you can't actually hurt or change anything - just see what lies behind the foofoo's... the roses and the words and all the rest of it ;). Probably the most important thing to remember is that any time you place something between < > you are "speaking computer" and issuing it with a command - anything from simply saying that you want to start a new line to inserting a link to another page and much more. My best advice is to find some free web space and play to your hearts content. Don't worry about it being perfect for others to look at - do it just for yourself for fun and practise and if it turns out great, wonderful... share it with all of us :). Sign up for a message board or two as well, just to see what's what, nothing magic about them, just common sense really. Try something new in your computer at least a couple of times a week, don't stick with just what you know, you'll be surprised what you have in there!! And most of all Have Fun!!! Also remember that this board is open for you to practise your computer skills on, if you muck up and want whatever you've attempted deleted just let me know and I'll get rid of it for you and it really doesn't matter how many attempts you want to have at whatever you are trying - it's just a simple tick at my end to get rid of a post. :)
