This is really upsetting. I mean even those of us who have not been directly involved probably know someone who is. A coworker of my husband's as a relative in the Pentagon who is unaccounted for.

I was talking on the phone with a dear friend earlier today and we both are just saturated. We are trying to find some diversion - not an escape but something to set us back from this just for a moment. I finished painting a small American Flag to hang (once I can get holes drilled). But this is all we have seen or heard since Tuesday and hours upon hour or seeing only tragedy on the TV and hearing on the radio and even talk in the streets, it takes its emotional toll.

I am working on an article for a small magazine regarding the hatred following this act - backlash against anyone who may remotely be Arab or who could be Islamic. It is sad. I knwo we want to blame someone, but this is like saying the Rev Jim Jones is indicative of what all Christians are. (jonestown). Yes we are angry but is attacking people who do not condone these acts right? OK, a few groups in a couple states acted out in support of NYC and DC, but let the police handle it. To respond yourself with violence is dropping to the same level of terrorists.

Then there are those trying to profit from the acts...

Here is an email I sent out today - feel free to cross post it...

"This is an email I sent out earlier, feel free to pass it on - Karen...
In the Sept. 12 issue of its newsletter, Internet Scambusters in Boone, N.C., said it had received reports of spammers sending out e-mails asking for assistance for "emergency relief funds," and directing recipients to contribute money to the Red Cross through the spammers' Web sites.

"Many of these spammers are trying to steal money and credit card numbers," the group said. "Do not respond to these e-mails."

The Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email (CAUCE) and SpamCon Foundation in San Francisco also warned of online attempts to fraudulently profit from the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

According to these groups, scammers are soliciting donations via e-mail and postings in community forums in the names of the victims of the attacks.

In a typical message, the scammer claims to be part of an "Express Relief Fund," or "Victims Survivor Fund," the groups said. One message claims the donations will go to the Red Cross, but the link leads to a Web site that isn't connected to that organization.

According to CAUCE and SpamCon, the World Trade Center spams appeared within one hour of the disaster. While some spammers asked for donations, others made light of the event.

"It's not unusual for news events to be mentioned in upcoming spam," said Tom Geller, executive director of SpamCon Foundation.

Geller said in addition to soliciting fraudulent donations, spammers also use tragedies to "bless what they are doing."

"They put a reference to the tragedy at the top of their e-mail -- [i.e. saying how sorry they are] -- in order to protect themselves from criticism for sending spam." >

If you want to make donations, do so directly through the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Fireman's Releif Fund...

For more information on these groups, go to: http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/US/Emergency_Information/

or www.redcross.org

http://www.redshield.org/crisis/ (Salvation Army)

If in doubt when you get am email soliciting donations, ignore it and report it to your local consumer action agency.

It is really a sad state of affairs when garbage like this happens. But spread the word so we can ensure the donations we make get to the people who needs them!"

Well must run. I am coloring my hair - have to do something and I know this is an odd thing to do, but at least I am doing something. Doug and I donated two cases of Vet Wrap to the Search Dog groups...

It just sucks not being able to do anything else but watch the horror...
