..I ever come across one. There are a ton of those early, wonderful, classic and still reknown herbals - starting in 300BC in fact. ;) But it remains interesting that his doctrine of signatures was not in fact without merit, lucky guessing maybe?. Monika, what do some of your Grans margin notes say? I am so envious! What a wonderful family heirlom that is, totally priceless! Best I could hope for is a reprint (if such a thing exsists). I think my earliest herbal dates back to 1969, entitled "Garden Herbs for Australia and New Zealand" but it is actually a really fascinating work with many mentions of the war years and the heavy reliance on herbs that went on during that time due to lack of supplies of many other medications.

To Quote (abridged as it is long)...."proved during the last world war...the women of Britain were asked to gather herbs....over 750 tons of dries leaves were gathered....included in this total was 2000 tons of rose hips .....(prickly, awkward work amongst the hedges). Herbs that were especially asked for were belladonna, marigolds, yarrow, comfry, dandelion root, wormwood, nettles, elderflowers and hawthorn berries. Seaweeds were gathered to from rocky costal areas (goes on to talk about it's involvment in the making of penicillin in fact)..... another plant that was urgently needed was foxglove and it is interesting to note that New Zealand helped make up the deficiency by sending forty five tons to Britain."

I think this is fascinating info and perhaps part of the reason for the resurrgence of interest in the power of herbs to heal. :)
