Marlene, since Calif has nice mild winters how bout a nice Jade Tree. I have one that just turned 21 years old and just finally reached 15" tall!!! It loves full sun and is draught resistant. It also has little neat flowers every fall!!!

Other than that how bout some nice colored cacti [the grafted ones come to mind]. Again, draught resistant and LOVE full sun and heat.
