Why do they appear? What are we seeing or perceiving? And why does it happen to some of us and not to others?

I'll admit to having one of those man standing over the bed things happen to me. I had awakened in the night and a man with a beard that wrapped up to his sideburns, no moustache, very neatly trimmed. Just standing there looking at me. Let's say that I was frozen with fright, and no more than blinked and he was gone. So I wondered if I'd had an intense dream, or if I saw what I remember?

BTW his shirt was some dark plaid looking stuff and he wore these suspender things, looked very dapper but clothing did not seem related to our era. He looked like what I'd expect a twenty something irishman to look like a hundred years ago...

Have any of you heard of that guy that talks to the dead? Arrrrrgh...can't pull his name up, let me think on it a while. He's on the Sci Fi channel late night. Amazing fellow.
