I just spent another long day with a 5 year old (since pre-school is over it's a 10 hour day.
The things I have found that keep their attention the longest are the old fashioned toys. Crayons, markers, paints and lots of different kinds of paper. Play dough with cookie cutter, birthday candles, plastic knives and chopsticks. Strips of colored paper and glue to make long paper chains. Popsicle sticks and glue to make birdhouses and boxes. Spoolknitting and a little loom to make potholders. I have an Easy Bake Oven from about 1968 that we make cakes in, using Jiffy mixes. A sandbox in the backyard and dishpans full of water with lots of plastic dishes, spoons and containers to make stuff for Mack to taste.
We drive to the beach or to the Dennis the Menace playground and that takes up a good part of the day. There is a pond nearby that one grand daughter in particular loves for finding polywogs. Kids movie matinees and too many videos and kids TV shows (on the satelite dish).
I must confess.......I need ideas that keep them busy and let me do something else - after a few hours, my patience can run short.
Have you ever made bracelets and necklaces using bugle beads and fish hook attachers (they look like little mis-shapen brass safety pins)?
I would love to have ideas for girls... 5, 8 and 9. Sometimes very feminine, sometimes tom-boys.
