Subject: Zoos are a dichotomy for me.....
In reply to: Kris 's message, "The two we have here are (long)" on 06:40:47 05/31/01 Thu

I have been an animal lover all my life. I used to stand in line for Sat matinees, to see Tarzan and dream of having a lion. I wan't realistic then and I'm still not....I would love to have an elephant, a rhino, a giraffe......one of everything in my back yard and I could ruin them with spoiling.
Since my very young adult life....I always cry at zoos, yet I know their importance and if it wasn't for them, we would have even more lost and endangered species.
Like Kris, I always notice the compulsive behavior and find it so sad. My in-laws live in San Diego and we have been to their world-class zoo and also to SeaWorld several times...they are better, but still......make me uncomfortable. They also have one of those Wild Animal parks where you ride a tram.

But many, if not most children get their only exposure to animals at these places and hopefully exposure softens their hearts and creates a caring for all living creatures.
