Lincoln Park Zoo and Brookfield Zoo. Lincoln Park Zoo always makes me sad and I refuse to go there. It's dirty and smelly, at least it was the last time I went there. Brookfield is much better. They strive for a natural habitat for most of the animals. I went with some friends a couple years ago and some things I saw really bothered me. Everyone thought it was so cute to watch the otter circling for hours in his little tank. Sorry, I spent about half an hour there and to me it looked like obsessive behavior. Yes, otters do those things but they don't do them for six hours straight. The tank was too small and he was by himself. That can't be healthy. The other thing that bothered me was the wolf display. It was very open. There was no way for the lone wolf to get away from prying eyes. They're pack animals, not animals that should live a solitary existence with people staring at them all the time. No, I wasn't pleased.

I also have to say that we went to Sea World about six years ago. I've always loved dolphins and whales but had never seen one *in real life*. I cried. Isn't that silly? It was such an emotional experience for me. The beauty, the grace, and the sad fact that these majestic animals were held in captivity when the whole ocean should belong to them. I enjoyed it, and Seaworld does do good things - it just made me sad.

I also have to admit that animal attractions were spoiled for me at a very young age. My parents took Mel (brother) and I to a travelling circus kind of thing. The monkey house was dark and smelly. Every animal in there had chewed their fingers to the bone. It was horrible. The ponies they were using for rides were old, sick, tired and emaciated. To this day I can't go to a circus that features animal attractions with my kids. They may go with their grandma and aunts but I refuse to go.

I believe that many of the zoos do wonderful things in regard to endangered species and such. Brookfield does good things. It's the small zoos and the travelling circuses that I don't like.
