I think that we are way too lax these days with the historical events that can teach moral lessons.

Even though I cringe at the horrors that went on in the concentration camps to my ancestors, I feel that it will be VERY important for me to pass the information on to my children of why it went on, why it must never happen again, and why they must never involve themselves in anything that may result in the sort of behavior that started these events.

I guess a love thy neighbor type of thing. I believe that we live in a society that wants to close their eyes and ears to the horrible things that we do to each other every day, and I think that it is a slap in the face to all those who gave their lives so that we might learn from the atrocities that were commited, for us to just sit back and ignore them.

i.e. - Internment camps, Concentration Camps, Slavery, etc, etc.

I started reading very young, 4 actually, and I was a SPONGE growing up. I was the annoying little brat asking, "Why? Why? Why? Why?" all the time (hmmmm, you can't tell that on the board can you?! LOL). My parents had a more difficult time feeling comfortable with teaching me things before they were ready, but when I got it in my head that I wanted to learn about something, I didn't quit until I had all the answers! LOLOL!

I guess the bottom line is, if you feel uncomfortable teaching these things to her, and if she feels incomfortable hearing them, or, if either of you have trouble initiating discussion about them, maybe its not time yet. You just have to use your judgement on what you feel comfortable doing as a parent.

As far as her teachers go? I feel that it is ABSOLUTELY none of their business what you are letting her read (as long as it isn't pure smut or gore! LOL!). At 4,5, and 6 I was reading and looking at pictures and text in my mother's medical text books. Yes, there were pictures of *shhh!* *whispering* penises and vaginas in there... along with patellas, pectoral muscles, sternums, phalanges, femurs, radial bones, quadriceps, craniums, clavicles, well you get the picture. Was my mother a bad mother? NO. It was the human anatomy and it is beautiful and VERY interesting. My entire family is in the medical field and I am sure it is because of that I was able to lifeguard for 7 years (two of them at Cedar Point, you can imagine the HooHaa's that went on there!) and deal with the spinal injuries, bone breaks that are associated with giving CPR, the blood, vomit, and other bodily fluids that are associated with giving basic first aid, anyway, I digress, you get the picture.

Remember, you are a GREAT parent, you have gotten her this far and she has turned out great, you will be all right!

Good luck!
