Picasso's "Blue" period only lasted about four years. Let's see if I remember this correctly: He had suffered through the suicide of a friend (can't remember his name), he was very young - late teens/early twenties and his sales had dropped dramatically. He was living in poverty and despair and this transferred onto the canvas. Of course, Picasso is most known for his Cubist works and I think that's what we're most exposed to. In my art history class we glossed over the blue and rose periods and moved right along to his better known works. This painting, however, remains my favorite by him. It touches something in my soul.
