I'm quite into aromatherapy a bit myself and do dabble. However, I must warn anyone that it can be quite potent and you do have to be careful what you mix up. IMO, you can't go past lavender as a "good for almost everything" kind of oil. It is the basis for most blends but can be used on its own for many many things. For the dogs in particular, I use a blend (mixed in equal parts) of geranium (for temperament), lavender (for relaxation) and bergamot (for fighting general ills). I usually sprinkle a couple of drops on their bedding every week. I'm not sure about using essential oils directly on their coat though, you always have to have a base oil (usually almond) and then you mix a tiny amount of the essential oils into the base when massaging. I think it would be pretty icky to massage a dog with oil so when I do Barney, he just gets the inhalation benefits from his bedding and the fire place (I put oils into my water jug on top of the fire and it evaporates). I massage him with dry hands. He turns into a big puddle of goo!
