Subject: Excerpts from an interview with Gillian Anderson about XF's future

This ran on the AP Entertainment Wire. Thought it might be of interest. Comments from me at the end.

An Old Mystery on ‘The X-Files’
With one week to go before Fox announces its fall schedule, it is still unclear whether the network will show another season of ‘‘The X-Files,’’ its hit Sunday night science-fiction show. A decision has not been made, Fox executives have said.
It has virtually become an annual ritual: Doubts are raised about the future of ‘‘The X-Files’’ just before the network announces that it will, after all, stick with the show. And most people in television expect the same thing to happen this time around.
But word that the show will continue would not necessarily be welcome to one of its stars, Gillian Anderson, who has continued with the program this season without a regular presence from her original leading man, David Duchovny.
Anderson let her ambivalence about her role on the show be known in a recent telephone interview in which she was to promote the show’s two-part season finale, which starts on Sunday. She said she would probably not even remain on the show if she were not required to be by her contract.
‘‘For a lot of people, if you don’t like your job, you can quit your job,’’ Anderson said. ‘‘I don’t necessarily have that option.’’
It’s not that she does not like the series, Anderson said; it is just that she has been with it eight years, and ‘‘eight years is a long time.’’ During those years her character, the FBI agent Dana Scully, has gone from feeling skeptical about the existence of aliens to being abducted by aliens. She said she had not believed that ‘‘The X-Files’’ would last more than seven years without running out of plot lines. But somehow, she acknowledged, the program has managed to remain fresh.
So what does she think about the season finale, in which her character’s pregnancy will finally run its course? (Fox says it is possible that the father will wind up to be an alien.)
‘‘There are a lot of twists and turns that the audience has been journeying through with us,’’ she said. ‘‘And here, at the end, it’s kind of interesting to see what happens with Scully and this full belly of hers.’’

I *REALLY* wish they would just go ahead and end it after this season. As that seems unlikely (the columnist correctly points out that they play the will they/won't they game in regards to whether or not XF will be renewed every year at this time) I wish they would allow both GA and DD to leave the series and just let Doggett, Skinner and whoever be on the TV show, while saving Mulder and Scully for the movies.
What worries me is that by insisting on at least a minimal Mulder and/or Scully presence on the TV show, they are destroying the audience for future XF movies and destroying the desire GA and DD might have to continue playing Mulder and Scully on the big screen.
