Okay, Det. I was following you like a bloodhound there but I still came up with a different answer :-D ! My feeling is that the IVF thing started way early, in Season 5 perhaps, I won't get into it again but my conclusion is based on the elevator scene when Scully tells Mulder that What was done to her has left her infertile. To me this is a direct link to the cancer and to "Emily" and so must be close to that time. So I am assuming that M/S were trying, as close buddies, to get her pregnant.

It was emotional for both of them and they both have deeper feelings for each other and lots of personal baggage and conflict issues as well. But S6 seems to me to be an exploration of those issues. Look at the number of times the issue of being lovers is raised, along with the idea of fatherhood and being a husband. In Triangle Mulder declares his love and is rebuffed but he also kisses Scully's double in case, he never sees her again...that is a big emotional jump for Mulder.

And in the very next eppy, Dreamland we see the big issues brought up big time. Scully's longing to settle down, and Mulder so afraid that he makes a lousy husband and father, Terms of Endearment(again about Fatherhood and Mulder takes it head on), Rain King is all about love growing out of friendship which is pretty obvious, Ghosts casts M/S as lovers even if they both deny it, Tithonus (again explores Mulder losing Scully only this time he threatens her new partner), Arcadia finds our duo once again playing the husband/wife roles.

Milagro...ah, Milagro where it all comes to a head...again we have the lovers dying again we have Mulder threatening but this time it is all out in the open..."Are you telling me what I read was true?" he asked Scully...in other words, I have a right to know if you are sleeping with this man. "All she wants is for him to notice her", not a good explanation of Scully but it does put her in her appropriate place re:Mulder for this story...Her heart is nearly ripped out because SHE is now one of the LOVERS. And her partner is NOT the STRANGER but is, in fact, at the end...Mulder.

Field Trip is the follow up to Milagro...and it allows us inside Mulder and Scully's head. Now, notice there are no scenes with sexual content...which is odd with what we know of Mulder. And there are scenes of intimacy, Mulder's bedroom is featured, Scully as the widow and anothe view of the bedroom. I really think Freud would have something to say about the images they both experience but it is interesting that we do not see their final shared fantasy, the one that caused Mulder to stretch up his hand. But we do see the out reach of a hand in the last scene.

And by Biogenesis we see a Scully that is totally sure of her place against Diana Fowley and interestingly enough in Amor Fati a DF that also has come to accept that Scully is the one Mulder should be with.

Rabid
whose one hand is now very, very, tired...please excuse any typos.
