Or at least that's what the room's occupants assume his high-pitched squeal means. They watch as Bubba wipes a pumpkin orange tear from his eye. He removes his Marvin the Martian necktie and wraps it gently around the dying hamster. After this moving act, there isn't a dry eye in the room.

Kande huddles with the mayor. The two confer, then nod and shake hands. The mayor clears her throat. "Excuse me. Excuse me, all. I'd like to make an announcement." Everyone falls silent, except for Bubba's snorkling. "I am officially declaring today Sweetie the Hamster day. A tribute to the hamster, and a fundraiser to fight breast cancer in hamsters, will be held this evening at Kande's Klub."

In unison, those present remove their PDAs to check their calendars. A few pull out cell phones to rearrange plans. Kenamom silently tallies up the fines for using a cell phone within 10 yards of a deathbed.

Kande moves tentatively toward the hamster. She whispers a few words to the adorable rodent, then leaves to ready the klub for the tribute.
