All interviews with Mick Taylor, both past and present, confirm that he never met Brian Jones. He was recommended to Mick Jagger by his agent when Jagger was looking around to find someone who could fully replace Brian.

I think Mick wanted someone in place BEFORE he pitched Brian into the trash can, so no one would notice any sudden decrease in the band's creativity or musicianship. I've said this before here on the board, and I stand by that opinion. Brian had already been replaced in the band before he got his walking papers (the entire band, Charley, Bill and Ian included, said they fired him, not the other way around). Dispite what Brian had been saying to all his friends for quite a while, I don't think he'd EVER abandon this particular "baby" unless forced to.
