Subject: Milwaukee Area Schools

Looking for input on the various schools in the Milwaukee/Southeastern WI area. Give me all of the opinions/details: the good, the bad, the ugly. Open to anything within 45 minutes drive of downtown, which leaves a lot of options. Would be enrolling a young male. Specifically hoping to find a school that is more family orientated and not as much of a "Mean Girl" high school clique vibe amongst the moms... Not likely raising a future world champion, so does not need to be highly competitive.

All of the Milwaukee schools will be within your 45 minute driving range. Bellator is likely the furthest out and could be pushing that time during peak drive times/construction.

Looking for a combination school of all of the above. We would like to incorporate both solos and teams if he does well. Irish Fest/St. Patrick's Day festivities would be great.

Bonus if they do adult classes so mom can join in the fun.

I guess we are specifically looking for a positive environment with minimal bullying and cliques (for both kids and parents).

[> [> [> The only schools I'm aware with Adult classes are Glencastle and Milwaukee Academy. There are no teams at Milwaukee Academy. -- hth, 14:17:59 06/17/24 Mon (NoHost/206.252.36.24)

All the schools perform at Irish Fest and do St. Patrick's Day shows. Trinity is probably the most performance heavy.

Schools that I see fielding teams are Cashel, Trinity, Kinsella, Glencastle and McNamara McCarthy.

All the schools obviously have solos, but my observations and only my opinion are that the strongest solo schools are Bellator, Beglan, Kinsella and McNamara McCarthy.

Beglan and Kinsella both have children who dance with the school currently. Not being part of either of those schools I do not know if that is a positive or negative in the dynamics, but it is something I would want to be aware of and consider if I was looking for a school.

The best thing you can do is observe classes at these schools and observe how the parents and kids interact at feisianna and how they interact with their teachers there. There is a right school for every dancer and family, but only you can know which is going to be a good fit for your family. Also, if you are moving here and coming from another school that you are happy with, I suggest actually asking your teachers for a recommendation of what they think from what they know of you, your dancer, and the school.

So would we want a school with more boys already established? Or less boys? I'm easily confused.

He enjoys boys only classes or workshops. Some of his best friends are dance friends!

[> Some ideas -- Veteran Mom, 09:31:01 06/19/24 Wed (29.sub-174-194-106.myvzw.com/174.194.106.29)

First of all, if your son is Oireachtas qualified, transferring now means he has to sit out because of the 6 month transfer ban. Keep that in mind looking for a good time to transfer. A lot of kids do that after Oireachtas, my dancer did and sitting that Feis ban almost made her want to quit altogether. She was only able to Feis once between O and Nationals.

Second are you looking to move because of the moms or because of your son? You mention first the moms are “mean girls” or “bullying” and then that your son is being “bullied”. Your initial post seemed more focused on your feelings. Remember that a lot of these parents have been friends for years and it is hard to break into those groups. And if both of you are experiencing this, you may want to think about your behaviors and your son’s as well as those around you. A lot may be miscommunication or social awkwardness. Talking to people rather than about them is key. Making friends is hard work, even harder as an adult. If your son is truly being bullied, talk to the teachers. I don’t know one teacher in the area that would let that persist in class.

Thirdly, looking at schools, a lot has been covered here about adults and teams. So I’ll throw in my two cents from my perspective. Trinity and Beglan are large schools. He’d be one of a number of dancers. So more chances to make friends, but more chances to be lost in the shuffle. Glencastle is also a larger and great if you want a fun dance experience without the pressure to be a worlds-level dancer, but few boys. Smaller schools were better for my dancer who wanted to be competitive. So that leaves the smaller ones, Bellator, Cashel, Kinsella, McNamara McCarthy, and Milwaukee, though MM is pretty big too.

Every school has their own vibe, based on the teacher and parents. This is an individual sport, a team sport, and a performance group. So each aspect is different and you need to see what your dancer wants out of their career in dance before you look at schools objectively. They all have their own strengths in each of these aspects.

If I had a boy dancer, I’d be at Bellator or Kinsella, they turn boys into champions.

While none of this is wrong in terms of adapting, it still doesn't excuse the moms and mean girls from being mean...
