» His chest was on fire—several ribs had been broken when the horse had gone down on top of him, and one had bowed in, missing his lungs by a fraction of an inch. One leg was twisted into an unnatural position underneath the animal’s belly. Every time the mare heaved her sides in another breath, Briar wanted to scream in agony as he was jostled—but he didn’t. His mind was muddled, but he was able to come to a sort of understanding of what Clive had told him, and he did his best to lie still.

» The boy closed his eyes, wishing that would make the pain leave, and lay his face against the dirt. He was grateful that what the Drifter had ordered him to do didn’t involve moving; it wasn’t like he could anyway, being both pinned and crippled.

» The pounding hooves closed on them, with Briar actually feeling the beating on the packed ground, his ear to it. This was the end, then. He heard a crossbow release, and winced reflexively. And then he struggled to tune out the twin dull thuds of two bolts digging into what he could only guess was Clive. Even if he’d had the courage—or stupidity—to try to rush to the man’s aid, the boy simply lacked the physical capability. Several thumps told him their pursuers had dismounted, and he fought to slow ragged, shallow breathing. The horse’s bulky body mostly hid the sluggish rise and fall of his chest, and he pressed his eyes tightly shut again, mentally willed the Drifter to be all right. He had to be all right. And he wished, in vain he knew, that their chasers would just leave, wished they’d never come, and then the boy longed for Lily to come back. He’d never know what happened to her, never get to…panic rose in his throat, and suddenly, Briar knew he didn’t want to die. Sure, at times it had fleetingly crossed his mind, but now that he was looking at it as the only outcome, he simply wanted to live. If he could just live he’d find her, he swore he’d find her. Somehow, but only if he could just live.

» And suddenly, he wished very badly that simply wishing was enough.
