Thank you for expressing your presuppositions from the beginning. I understand where you are coming from. To have Christ living "in you" or the Spirit dwelling "in you" is of course a figure of speech. It is more of a spiritual indwelling, not a literal, physical thing.

That being said, I still believe that the Spirit dwells in us, and is active in helping the believer in various ways today.

I think the question we need to begin with is whether the Spirit that Peter preached in Acts is meant for just a select few, or for all believers. Since all of this is being narrated by Luke, and since Acts seems to be a continuation of the Gospel of Luke, it would be good to begin by considering Luke-Acts together as one story, recoginzing that Luke, as an author, included or omitted certain details in order to get a point across.

In the larger narrative picture of Luke-Acts, there is a definite emphasis on the role of the Spirit in the ministries of both Jesus and the Apostles in Lukes writings. Luke emphasizes the role of the Spirit even in the birth narratives. But the real story of the Spirit actually begins in chapter three.

"John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire . . . Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased (Lk 3:16, 21)."

Jesus was "full of the Holy Spirit" when he was tempted in the wilderness (Lk 4:1) and successfully overcame temptation. As a matter in fact, when he returned from the wilderness, he was in the "power of the Spirit (Lk 4:13)."

Because the Spirit of the Lord was "upon" him, he was appointed to: to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the Lord (Lk 4:18-19.)"

Later, in a parable, Jesus makes the point that our heavenly father God knows how to give good gifts to his children, and will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.

""If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him (Lk 11:13)?"

Jesus also told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would give them the words they neeed when they are brought to rulers and those in authority because of their faith (Lk 12:11-12).

As you move forward to the book of Acts, you see how all of these promises and teachings start coming together.

Before moving on to Acts, I would like comments on the teaching of the Spirit in the book of Luke.
