The 5 of us walked over to the cabin I was in. Cabin 5 where all the older girls were. At least I wouldn't be with girls like Shirra. That would be some real torture seein as she acts like she's 10. We got to the cabin and walked in. There were about 8 beds, 3 sets of bunkbeds and a bunk bed that wasn't put together. There were 2 girls in the room at the time when we got there.
Crys: Hi, are any of you LaShonda?
Girl1: Naw, she went to the lunch room to get some ice. She should be back in a few though.
Crys: Okay thank you. [looking at me] Chelle I'm going to go up to the main house and talk to the administrator. When LaShonda comes back tell her who you are and that I'll be right back.
Me: Sure Aunt Crys whateva you say.
Crys: Mmhmm. Come on Courtney and Shirra you two can come with me. Erika you can stay here with Chelle.
Erika:[weak smile] Thanx.
My Aunt Crys and 2 lil cousins left the cabin leaving me and Erika standing there like a couple of bumps on a log. We just stood there in silence listenin to the other girls talk.
Girl2: Girl you know all the guys came back to camp this year. That means we get to spend sometime with our boo's.
Girl1: Yeah hopefully there's a girl at the camp that Haze wants to get with this year, cuz he's always so lonely at camp.
Girl2: I know and Lib and Zane be leavin him to come see us. And you know I feel bad when they do but I have to see my baby.
Girl1: True dat, true dat.
Girl2:[walking over to me] Hi I'm Aashene` Jones but they call me Nay Nay and that's Sivon Morehouse, what's your name?
Me: Ann'DaChelle Jackson but they call me Chelle. This is my lil "sis" Erika Durham.
Sivon: So why are you here?
Me: My mami has breast cancer.
Nay Nay: What stage?
Me: I think 2nd.
Sivon: That's good actually, they can still get it before it gets any worse.
Nay Nay: My Dad has MS.
Sivon: And my Granny has Alziemer's.
Me: Oh I'm sorry to hear that. How long have y'all been coming here?
Nay Nay: I've been here since I was like 10 yrs. old.
Sivon: And I've been here since I was about 13, almost for about 5 yrs. now.
Me: Dang, y'all must like it huh?
Nay Nay: Actually we come to see our boyfriends that come here. Since our families don't really like them. We don't really spend too much time with them at home, but we met them here.
Sivon: Yeah that's true but the camp helps deal with what you're goin through.
Me: Well I just wanna do the 2 months so I can go back to my family and friends. I got a couple of parties to go to when I get back.
Sivon: Where you stay at?
Me: I stay in the ATL fa sho.
Sivon: Fo real? Where?
Me: On the East side. It's like 10 miles from where Blood territory is.
Sivon: We stay a couple of miles from Crip territory. But we ain't no Crips.
Me: I ain't no Blood neither. Know a couple of them but I ain't one.
Nay Nay: Yo why yo girl so quiet?
Me: She usually is unless somebody talkin to her. Rika talk girl.
Erika: I ain't got a thang to say ya know? But hey here come yo aunt.
Me: Oh joy. I can't stand her right now.
My aunt and 2 cousins walk in the cabin with some lady. She had to have been between 20 and 25 I'd guess. She wasn't old.
Crys: Chelle this is LaShonda, LaShonda this is my neice, Chelle.
LaShonda: Hi.
Me: Sup?
LaShonda: I see you've met a couple of our regulars, Nay Nay and Von.
Me: Yeah. Where can I put my stuff?
LaShonda: Well we normally don't have a lot of older girls that are around your age so we usually just put between 3 to 5 girls in this cabin. But this year it's only the 3 of y'all so you can have the 2 bunk beds in the corner.
Me: Aiightz. [I walked over to the bunk beds and put my stuff on them]
LaShonda: And you can put yo clothes in the dresser next to the beds if you'd like. I usually bring a couple of dressers down so the girls can put their clothes in them instead of living out of a bag for a couple of months. But I have to go back up to the main house to help situate some of the younger girls, so you can unpack then Nay Nay and Von can show you around.
Me: Aiightz. [she left and I put my stuff up]
Von: And you can have the fourth vanity in the bathroom for yo toileteries and whateva.
Me: Aiightz. Rika help me do some of this stuff. So I can lay down and write sooner.
Erika: Aiightz. [starts to help me put my things away.] Girl I will be so glad when you finally come back home. I'll still be there with Shirra and Courtney. Oh joy.
Me:[laughing] Girl things could be worse and you know it. But you know when I get back we gon hang together ri?
Erika: Aiightz.
Me: See you already startin to sound like me girl. That's a good sign.[we both laughed as we put my things away in the bathroom and into the dresser.]
When we were finally done we said our final goodbyes and they all piled in my aunt's Jimmy and left. I decided I'd go to sleep or write for a bit before it was time for an activity. Even though I had no idea what we were doing. Before I could lay down Nay Nay and Von decided to go somewhere, so I went with them. But we changed first. I guess we were going to see their boyfriends and walk around.
I put on one of my new outfits that Nelly had gotten me as a goin away but come back real soon present. It was some jean capri pants with pink thread and a pink dragon design on all the pockets and at the bottom of the pants, along with some white and pink Sauconys with white and pink shoelaces and white and pink socks, and a pink shirt that was a tank top but only had one strap to it that went diagonal across my body that said "BabiBoo" on it in sparkles.
Nay Nay and Von had on matching outfits that they had bought the day before. Short denim skirts with a split in the front with baby blue[Nay Nay] and light purple[Von] tube tops with white Reeboks and baby blue and light purple socks and shoelaces. Nay Nay had her dark brown hair in spiral curls while Von had her light brown hair in a wrap. My hair was a reddish brown with cinnamon ends and was in microbraids[which was all my hair too]. And I do have to admit we were lookin too good.
Von: Well we're ready to go around the camp.
Nay Nay: Yeah I just hope Lib doesn't come up to me talkin bout I can't wear this tub top. He thinks he's only supposed to see my body and I have to keep it covered in public.
Me: That's why I'm glad I ain't got no man ri now. The one I did have was over protetive but knew where to draw the line and quit.
Von:[lauhgs] Girl we can only wish for Zane and Lib to be like that.
Nay Nay:[laughing] I know that's right. Well let's go before I feel like layin down. Then we really would've gotten dressed for nothin.
Von: I heards that. Let's bounce.
Me: Aiightz.
We left the cabin and went straight towards the basketball courts where a lot of guys were standing around talking or playing basketball. There were a couple of girls over there but they were just watching and giggling everytime the ball came towards them and almost hit them.
Me: Okay now is it just me, or are those girls actually laughing at almost getting hit?
Von: Oh those are the bimbo girls. Don't worry about them though. They ain't nodody. They mostly swim and talk about guys, and how they can't get dirty cuz it's "against their religion". They're usually the girls that loose when we have the camp relay at the end of camp.
Me: Y'all have relays?
Nay Nay: Yeah. The cabin that we're in always wins. They usually combine us with one or two other cabins so it'll be fair.
Me: Oh well I know I'ma like that. I love to run.
Von: See that's the part we're slow on but we always pull through it and win when it gets to one of us or the guys.
Me: I just hope there are some cute guys here. My friends want pics even though they have boyfriends. They just wanna see who I met and whateva.
Nay Nay: Well there are a lot of cute guys here. But Lib and Zane have to be the cutest here. Their friend Haze is too but you know he's kinda on the mean side so...
Me: I understand. So where are your boyfriends?
Von:[pointing to some boys playing basketball] Over there. The one with the ball is Zane. And the guy he just passed it to is Lib.
Me: Oh they are cute.
Just then there was this loud feedback and someone got on the PA system.
PA Person: Good afternoon Camp Cope. Now today is our welcome day meeting so tonight we'll be meeting in the arena outside. So make sure you have everything and your acts together. And may I remind you that when a cabin is performing you are to be quiet, respect them, and listen. Because pretty soon you'll be paired with a cabin to do something with. What it is will be a surprise. Good day.
Me: What does he mean, welcome day acts?
Von: Oh he's just talking about when each cabin introduces themselves.
Nay Nay: Yeah and they pick the top boys and girls cabin after everyone has gone. And they're the Camp Champ until the relay.
Von: And at the relay they pick the MVP for the girls and the MVP for the guys and they're King and Queen and go to the dance together. But they also pick a court for them and we all sit together at the awards ceremony.
Me: Maybe I will like it here. Cuz I love competiting.
Von: Coo, so do we. Now we have a mass amount of hours before the welcome day acts so what y'all wanna do for it?
Me: I ono. What do you guys like to do?
Von/Nay Nay: Dance and sing. And I love cheerleading or anything like it.
Me:[laughing] Coo'. I like those things and I'm a cheerleader, a hi-stepper, and on the drill team.
Von: Coo', so maybe we could include some of that stuff into our act.
Nay Nay: Well we can worry about that later. We gotta go meet the guys.
Von/Me: Fine fine.
We walked over to the basketball courts where the guys were playing. By the time we got over there the girls had left the courts so it was just us and some other girls that had to be like between the ages of 13 and 15.
