The incentive of an ice cream party, which is slated once a month?, is for grades 1-5. It is the type of incentive this board is against. Whether ice cream is paid for out of PTA funds or Library funds (basically, PTA funds, yes?) or AR funds makes no difference. The issue is why are we rewarding kids for reading books?
The Book It program through Pizza Hut is referenced in the article on reward/incentive programs linked here. In this program, kids are rewarded pizza for reading. On the surface, it looks great... you get free pizza for reading. Does it motivate kids to read? No, not in the long run. The AR program, with a reward system, is similar.
We don't need to bribe kids to read... They should read because they love reading!
