Play with the marker first. Don't upgrade anything until you've shot a entire case or two of paint. Upgrade what you feel NEEDS upgrading. Don't add a gadget just because someone told you to, or you think it looks cool (unless you have lots of money). I'd recommend spending your money practicing and playing. This is what makes a great paintball player, not his gun. Once you've gotten a few weekends of games in, you'll be in a better position to answer this question yourself. I usually recommend a barrel as the first upgrade. The object of paintball is to shoot your targets. A barrel will improve this ability the most.

The most important upgrade is your skills. Practice, practice, practice. Eliminating players with your gun is only part of paintball. Learning to avoid bad situations and being eliminated, learning to move, communicate and shoot are all very important skills that will win you far more games than any fancy/hotrod/tricked/ultimate paintgun. Got extra cash? Go buy paint and field time and play. That's why you bought the gun in the first place. You can't buy your game by buying the latest gizmo, gadget, or "tournament" level gun. Like anything else, to be good you have to work at it.

Thus endeth the sermon.
