I think the reason you hear so much about the 99's is because there are more of them out there. They are a tremendously reliable, durable marker that hit the market at the beginning of the paintball 'boom'. They are basic, but easily upgradeable and inexpensive. One of the reasons players look into the F4 is because they are more interested in reliability and peformance rather than flash (at least that was my view).
Personally I prefer to get the base model and add the upgrades I want rather than getting a factory upgrade model. I also have a basic black 99 model. If I were to go back in time and choose again, I would still go with the basic F4 and add MY personal touches to it. To me, that is part of thr joy of ownership... making my marker uniqely mine.
