I will repeat what the FAQ and the instruction book says: DO NOT TAKE THE SITE RAIL OFF.

You should be able to clean and lube it fine with out it off. I took mine off after buying my gun used as well, only to find that there had obviously been trouble with this and the previous owner. The reciever is made of some pretty soft aluminium, and its especially easy to strip the site rail threads because of the thinness in that area.
