First of all, I know what it means to be a DM and I know what it means to be a player. I have never said that the entire game is up to the DM.

Would I have thought of such penalties? Probably not. I probably would have--- ad-libbed it. Imagine that. Playing with imagination and not rules. Do we need to assess every action in the game with a -/+ number? I am not against the rule. I just get tired of too many numbers cluttering up a game about characters.

Instead of saying, "I hit him in the face with mutton, he gets a minus one to attack! Ha ha!" Why not say, "I hit him in the face with a joint of mutton."? The DM would then say, "He gets really pissed off, wipes his face and prepares to do you serious harm." While assessing a minus one to the dude's next attack without ever saying it.

You seem to intimate that I expect too much from a DM. Not at all. I just expect the DM to set the stage, as you say. I would not feel right hitting a guy with a lamb chop, and then telling the outcome. Life is not like this. If we could make up our own outcomes in life, things would certainly be different, wouldn't they? Who's to say what the NPC does or how he reacts? It is the DM's job. Plain and simple. I, personally, would feel cheated if I got to dictate the outcome of every little thing I did in this way.

That's all. Do you see my point at all?
