Subject: The End of Magic in Inzeladun

For those who've been following the recent game events as well as various discussions here and elsewhere. It looks like we might have been given the key (or a part of the key) to undo Magic in Inzeladun. What might this mean?

For me, it is surely a double edged sword -- I like my characters to have power and magic is a great source of power. On the other hand, power that is unearned or undeserved gives the same satisfaction as cheating at solitaire. The point has been made several times on 3EBB that high level characters are basicly marionettes built out of magic items. If I took the magic items that Khrenikath is draped with and gave them to a first level character, we'd be hard pressed to defeat him! and we all learned about our weaknesses (and Strengths) when magic is removed in the latest Chaos Lord Adventures. [I was actually quite surprised at Khren's versatility (7 levels of fighter + full blooded Deep One stats helped a lot!) and despite the loss of my magic, the adventure was exhilerating. But I know that others, with no combat training, found it quite frustrating.]

It might be easy to point to a DM who is too lax with handing out the loot but the DM recieves a LOT of pressure from his players to hand out juicy stuff. If blame is to be given, we are *all* to blame for the current state of affairs!

Removing magic entirely, however, leaves me cold . . . this is a fantasy world -- magic belongs here -- it's what makes the world . . . magical. It's also the easy way out -- an extreme of the opposite sort. In my vision of D&D, Magic should exist but be treated with awe and wonder -- much the same way that we would look at it.

So where can a happy medium be found? Just as we are all to blame for the frivilous approach to magic, we must all take steps to change the trend (if change is indeed intended)

I think that Vince is toying with change and it would be better, I think to give input and reach concensus about that change before things change too radically.

So is anyone else troubled by being a walking Xmas tree?

I have some thoughts about changes that could be made to magic systems and magic usage but would like to hear others' thoughts first . . .
