In reply to: Justine 's message, "Re: Amalgamating teams at Warwick" on 17:42:17 11/11/03 Tue

I'm sorry to say this, but I think what is proposed is totally unacceptable, and I think the way that Cambridge's dirty washing has been brought into the open is also pretty shoddy.

Rachelle - you of all people should know how damaging it is to have senior members of your team openly questioning the judgement of the team captain and the coaches. If you have an issue, I think you should have kept it private. To have criticism coming openly from the former team captain is especially poor.

Secondly, the way I read the IVDA constitution, ANY couple that takes part in the Warwick team match as part of an amalgamated team will be ineligible to dance for their own university later in the year. Actually, I meant to bring this up earlier, because I think that the constitution has been updated erroneously. What was part of Ali's proposal is that couples may compete as part of amalgamated teams and their own university only if that amalgamated team is the one at IVDC, where the format would otherwise kill incomplete teams, and there is standing committee discretion. There is no good reason for amalgamated teams before IVDC, and a lot of good reasons why they shouldn't be allowed willy nilly, therefore 2.1.4.5 has been updated unclearly and wrongly, and should read:

2.1.4.5 No competitor may compete for more than one Member Society's team in any academic year, except in the case of amalgamated teams at IVDC under 2.8.1.5.1. Dancers are deemed to have competed for a particular team if they have taken part in any team match against other Member Society teams from the commencement of the academic year (including NUDC, SUDC, IVDC and any social events which include team matches).

Actually, on second thoughts, even with the current writing, this would bar the Cambridge couples from competing for other Cambridge later in the year, since there is no allowance for amalgamted sub-teams under the IVDA constitution, except in the context of the IVDA team match.

Rachelle et al. : you should continue trying to persuade your captain to let you enter as Cambridge A at Warwick. If she refuses, you should just accept that decision and only enter the opens.

PS The good reasons why amalgamated teams pre-IVDC should not be allowed are as follows:
1) There's no need, as all the competitors can still compete perfectly adequately;
2) It allows for the possibility of abuse.Consider this possibility:
Oxford and Cambridge are fighting it out for the A team. Amazingly, Oxford have the 5 best Jive couples on the university circuit, whilst Cambridge have the 7th best Jive couple on the circuit. Unfortunately, due to rules at competitions, Oxford is only allowed to enter A-D teams, meaning that Cambridge make the Jive final and therefore win the team match.
However, Bolton polytechnic have a three man team. Oxford decide to amalgamate its E team Jive with Bolton, improving Bolton's performance and in the process knocking Cambridge's A Jive out of the final and changing the result.
Is that fair? Under the rules of the competition, no.

3) Suppose that Cambridge have only two good couples, and then a load of rubbish, and that Oxford also only have two good couples and then a load of rubbish. By allowing teams to amalgamate, Oxford and Cambridge's couples could just decide to sod their teams and create a killer team. Is that right?

4) Now suppose that we have a situation like that just described, except that both Oxford and Cambridge are simply "missing" two other good couples each, who are away on projects and back for the second half of the year. If amalgamation can be allowed willy nilly, then Oxford and Cambridge can create a killer A-team for the first half, beating everyone, and then when their couples come back compete with each other and still beat everyone. Is that really what we want???

5) Suppose that four small teams all have one amateur couple. They all decide to amalgamate, despite the wishes of their team captains. This would not be right, and is not in the spirit of the team match.
