Well, I happen to disagree with you solely on your points about Susan Sarandon.
Now if you want to remark that the protrayal of Wensiscia wasn't as true to the books as it could have been, I will totally agree.
But simply changing the character does not make the story worse necessarily. They commpletely changed Irulan in the first DUne mini-series, and I thought the change really added to the dynamic of the story in terms of the sexual tension between her and Paul and Chani as well as her and her own father. The changes made created an interesting character who takes part in the story rather than is simply present and the mini-series was better as a whole for the change.
thus if the argument about Wensicia is that she made the story worse and COD suffered because of it, I am not sure I buy that.
In terms of plot, Wensicia's expanded role was needed in order to infuse conflict and give a face to the "villains" in the story.
In terms of her being Irulan's older sister, I did not think it was "stupid" merely because they changed the story to make her older. I don't think it was a bad change because being the older sister passed over by her father's favorite gives Wensicia purpose in terms of her wanting to take down House Atreides and her own sister.
If you want to say Susan Sarandon didn't do a good job in her acting because she made certain choices that weren't very strong, I'll buy that argument too. But just saying she was "wrong for the part" doesn't really make a strong case.
Now, the only reaason I'm sort of going off on this is because I have really yet to see a critique of Susan Sarandon that has included anything about her acting choices and why they were weak, or how the role of Wensicia could have been better portrayed.
I challenge you or anyone else to write a very thoughtful or persuasive argument that conveys the reasoning as to why Wensicia was not portrayed in the strongest way possible. I would like to read that critique.

Just a thought.
