WEll, first off, there is no such thing as faster than the speed of light anyway, so, no, you wouldn't feel relativistic effects because nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. But forget that.

Think about the energy it would take for a wormhole or fold in space to be created...um, that's pretty inconceivable. It's somewhat like the transporter on Star Trek...way too much energy to ever really accomplish. And the guild navigators somehow navigate with the power of their minds hyped up on some drug? Not exactly realistic if you ask me.

Let's see, we can fold space and predict the future, but we still don't have anything stronger than atomic bombs and most of the time we fight with knives?
Sounds like Herbert thought it was a "cool" idea. Convenient.

OKay, giant worms that live in the desert...they create the planet's oxygen as a by-product...of what? I don't even remember what the hell those things eat. Spice miners are pretty small and inconsequential meals. The amount of energy needed to charge a creature that size would be incredible. Sounds like a pretty dumb idea if you ask me...giant worms.

oh yeah, and genetic engineering is by just breeding (only amongst royalty mind you)...nothing in there about cell manipulation or DNA bio-informatics or anything. Not really reality based for our time.

Seriously, anyone can nay-say. Dune really isn't any more reality based than Star trek or Star Wars. Hell at least in Star Trek they know what all the kinds of matter are. Dune is much more spiritually based, and that's great, but it's science really isn't above and beyond other Science fiction.
Also, Dune might do well to bring elements of Star Wars in...that franchise and story has certainly been pretty damn successful.

The reason Dune is awesome, isn't because of it's cool science ideas (though some of the ideas are really neat...though no neater than a lightsaber), it's because of the characters, the relationships between the characters, and the storyline that those relationships inspire.
The point is, I don't understand how you could be a sci-fi fan at all if you don't suspend your disbelief. I mean you certainly have to do it plenty for Dune, because it's just as out there as any other sci-fi franchise: Foundation, ender's Game, Star Wars, etc.
