I see that Peter Stirling made a comment on the sunday footy show last week suggesting that there seems to be an increase this year in the amount of 10m advancing penalties for back chat.

The fact that these sorts of penalties are on the increase simply means the situation out there on the field is NOT improving and is getting way out of control. And certainly the players are still treating the 10m advancement with distain because these sorts of penalties are not making a difference.

Surely the 1st grade refs must feel like they are banging their heads on a brick wall in this matter ? Its time to get creative I'd say.

And I agree with a previous poster who made the comment about some district refs who make up their own "interpretation" of 10 metres when they get back chatted. I saw one guy in a district "A" grade game last week march downfield about 35 metres - Good on him I say !

If the gutless ARL and the coaches who run rough shot over the current rule book wont give a rule change to support the refs then I roundly applaud any ref that takes it upon himself to initiate his own counter-measures.
