Lenariah slowly tried to take in what she had just heard. She stared at her distraught friend, who was dashing out of view in an uncharacteristically awkward manner. All traces of the grace, the elegance that had surrounded Celefe, had vanished with the soft breeze. In place of this refined warrior was now a grieving shadow. The enchantress followed the sobbing figure with her eyes as it stumbled away from her. The life force had somehow changed, not nearly as bright as it had been a few precious moments prior.

How terrible it must be to know that your life is the result of a death. Lenariah could not fathom the pain that these people felt. However, the enchantress knew that their turmoil could not equal her own. It is better to know that someone else died so you could live than to know that you are solely responsible for the death of another. Celefe and the others could not control the cycle of their life force. Lenariah could have controlled the fact that she had taken away life.

The enchantress bit her bottom lip to hold back the tears. Her heart began beating faster than before, as she tried to suppress the memories. She told herself over and over not to cry, that these people did not need to know her past. She told herself that she was ruining the one chance she had at starting a new life, with a clean slate. She told herself that it was a mistake, that it wasn’t her fault.

Her focus was broken when Tevion gently touched her shoulder. At first, she feared that the kind lord had noticed the construed expression on her face. As she turned her head to look at him, however, there was no look of pity or condolence. Instead, Tevion was grinning playfully. He motioned to his tablet, where Lenariah then directed her attention. The sketch was beautiful, as if it had more life in it than the real world did. It was an intricate drawing of the clearing where they were presently resting, with every minute detail perfectly shown.

“Tevion, you truly have a gift for art,” Lenariah said, any trace of sorrow leaving her voice. “Wherever did you acquire such a talent?”
