"No, Lenariah, I am most in your debt for saving me. To die on that battlefield was no intention of mine, nor would it have been necessary. But as it was, by all logical explanations, I should have died owing to what happened to me." Celefé paused, wondering what exactly had happened.

"It is something to do with my people, the Everi. All of us have the Light, a form of ancient magic tied to the land of our birth. It is a very powerful thing, enabling us to extend beyond the etheral aspect of our crafts, to understand the ways of the natural world around us, and even it augments our physical abilities, gifting us with sharpened senses," a breath, "and immortality. However, with such a gift, there always remains consequences. Children are born only when another of our kind is slain, and so the younger of our kind, like Tevion and I, always have that knowledge weighing on us. And because the Light ties us to our homeland, we subsequently begin to die when we leave it." Her voice dropped into a lower and more mysterious tone.

"But there is a way around this restriction, though it is considered extremely dangerous and carries the penalty of death if anything should go awry." Cold silver eyes looked directly into Lenariah's. "When it's done, your Light is taken from your body and placed within something or someone for safekeeping, and you become mortal. It frees you from the limitations of your home, but should the courier of your power be destroyed, you slowly die unless you return to your birthplace."

She leaned back and sighed. "Now with that bit of history explained, I'll tell you why I should have died." Her lids lowered, and silence reigned for a brief moment. "When I came to this morning after the battle, I started looking for Tevion on the field. He's a good enough fighter but he doesn't really like to. I mean, call me strange but I feel like I have to look after him in combat even though he's older than me." She caught herself before she continued to ramble.

"I was walking around, with him," a vague hand gesture indicated the grey steed, "and I saw all their faces. And I felt their need, their desire for life pulling at me because they knew I could give it back to them. When I went to help them ease their passing with my power, I lost control. They drained my Light, the only thing sustaining me beyond the forest's edge. I can't remember anything after it began, only waking up. Waking up when I never should have." She glanced back up at Lenariah.

"Except I'm the new home to someone else's power. Trust me, I didn't know about it either until ten minutes ago. It kept me alive and would have eventually healed me fully in about a month, while my own Light regenerated. But thanks to you, I'm practically good as new without the wait." A forced smile showed on her face as behind the mask she wrestled with anger, confusion, and worry. "Excuse me for a moment, would you?"

Springing to her feet, Celefé quickly strode over to when her brother sat, sketching a picture in a tablet. Without looking up, Tevion closed the sheaf of papers. "What's on your mind, Celefé?" he murmured as she stopped before him.

"Did you know? Did he tell you?" his sister demanded.

With a genuinely confused look, Tevion responded "No, what should I know?".

"It's Anatil." she whispered. "I'm his Courier; I've got his Light in me. He would never do this without telling me, not unless..." Anger won the match in her mind. "Damn it! I told them both that it was a hopeless mission, that it was needlessly risking a life we really can't afford to lose." Her tirade slowed, the façade crumbling. "A life that I can't afford to lose." Tears began to slide down her face, diamonds of despair glittering inthe early noon Sun. Standing, Tevion laid a hand on his sister's shoulder before retrieving his pencils and paper. He then proceeded to occupy the place by Lenariah Celefé vacated.

"It would be best to leave her for a while." he quietly advised before opening the sketching pad to a fresh page.
