Subject: Background checks on priests

A diocese near me announced that it will now start doing background checks on their priests before they are sent to a new parish.

All I thought was that it's a little late now once they are ordained. They should have been screened and checked out before even entering the priesthood.

Yes, I totally agree Neysa. All I can say is that altho I'm befuddled that they haven't done these cks until recently, its better late than never.

I think because there is such a shortage of priests. That they took anyone into the seminary, and just ignored all the problems until it was too late.

I was stunned when I saw on the news that this diocese was now going to do background checks on their priests. This diocese has such a shortage of priests that they used to run commercials on tv asking men to join the priesthood.

I don't know if they have been doing background checks on men who want to become priest. I don't even know how to find the answer to that question! :)

It's important to do the background check. But that's not enough. Every Bishop has the right to full disclosure on every priest who is being transferred to his diocese. A background check will bring up convictions, but full disclosure will give the big picture.

A priest may have had a child w/ an adult. That will never come up in a criminal background check, but the Bishop might want to know that before assigning the priest.
