It is the only time of year you can pass folks and see everyone smiling. I love the atmosphere of joy and giving!

[> Easter -- Joan, 13:52:26 08/14/07 Tue [1] (ip68-0-253-131.ri.ri.cox.net/68.0.253.131)

That's my favorite religious holiday, because it's so important to our religion.

But I love all the hoopla around Xmas. Even all the shopping, preparing, and crowds that lead up to it are fun to me.

Easter feels more like a "religious" holiday. Christmas doens't have the same "serious" feel to it.

Joan

[> Easter -- Neysa, 14:41:45 08/14/07 Tue [1] (user-38lciga.dialup.mindspring.com/209.86.74.10)

I've always loved Easter. It is a very religious holiday. I remember going to church with my mom on Holy Thursday, and Good Friday.

Getting our Easter basket blessed on Holy Saturday, that contained all the wonderful food we would eat for breakfast on Easter Sunday after coming home from Mass.

The church looked so beautiful with all the lovely flowers on Easter Sunday.

Infact, my parents were married the week following Easter. The church was already decorated with all the flowers.

If it does, that's easily my favorite. Football, friends, family and food? What else can you ask for? Otherwise, its Easter. Then, we 'get' to play football in the backyard.

When I was in the USAF overseas, I enjoyed any holiday where we had off and the host nation did not. That way, I could go to the shops and restaurants...and have a look around. It was so relaxing it's hard to explain. When I was stn'd in Germany, I went to Wiesbaden or I'd take a nite train to Florence or Paris over Thxgvg depending on what was up. Boy, were those the good ole days or what?

I do not like holidays where gifts are exchgd. I still have bags full of gifts I havent even used yet. Then, I have to buy folks stuff that they wont use. If I give money or gift cards, I get teased that I'm takin' the ez way out. My family and friends get irritable abt stuff that doesnt matter. You can have Christmas. Bah Humbug! At least I get some quality prayer time in...for patience and for it to be over soon w/ as lil' pain as possible. LoL

Barb, what does your family do for Chanukah? Just curious.

So I'll take holidays when we get together w/ family and friends and eat, drink and be merry. Great stuff! Take care, God Bless,

Phil from AZ

[> [> We kind of mix Chanukah and Christmas together........ -- Barb, 11:58:11 08/15/07 Wed [1] (clgrtnt9-port-24.dial.telus.net/161.184.54.24)

Chanukah is not a religious holiday but a festive one. It is called "Festival of the Lights." At our house we decorate outdoors a little, with white and blue lights (traditional) instead of the multi colours used at Christmas. Instead of Christmas dinner, we have latkes (potato pancakes, with steak (cause that's what Ian prefers) and veggies. We use to light the Menorah (candles) when the kids were young. Since Chanukah lasts 8 days, a candle is lit the first night, 2 candles the 2nd night and so on until there are a full 8 on the last night. A prayer is spoken over the lighting of them. Gift giving is traditionally a gift per day for each of the 8 days for the children. We did that too when the kids were little. Now we give them a few gifts at Chanuakah and a few at Christmas, and it is often that the 2 holidays run together.

Some us are familiar w/ other Jewish traditions and holidays. I, for 1 had, very lil' idea what Jewish folks did during Chanukah. I'm not sure why this is, except that I'm so busy at Christmas. Again, thx for sharing what you do/did during Chanukah. Take care, God Bless,

By the way I love potato pancakes. Just had some two weeks ago at our church festival. They are very popular in this area.

Even people who don't believe in any god celebrate Xmas. It's just a fun holiday. It's easy to get swept up in the good feelings.

One year one of the days of Chanukah and Xmas Eve conincided, so we went to our friends' house and had Chanukahmas Eve dinner. :-)

They lit the candles, and the two oldest kids said the prayers in Hebrew. It was really nice. Of coures other than Adonai, I have no idea what anyone is saying in Hebrew. :-)

My favorite holiday is Easter and Christmas. I love them both equally!

Easter because that is the day Jesus Christ was resurrected and became the Living Christ.

Christmas because that is the day we celebrate the Saviors birth.

If you really deeply think about it, is there one
( Christmas or Easter ) that you like a tad bit more than the other?

Christmas is too commericialized. Last year, it was my very first Christmas as a Christian. Last year, we celebrated with gift giving. This year will be different. This year we are going to take out the commericialism and place it where it belongs, the focus being on Jesus Christ and his birth. Last year we did celebrate by eating on the floor and made similar foods that were eaten. It was nice and simple, roasted chicken with wheat rice, hummus and pita bread, grape juice ( substitute for wine ), and a few other foods which I can't remember at this time. Instead of buying big expensive gifts this year, we will spend no less than $10 on something sentimental. I think people are loosing the meaning what Christmas is really about. It's about giving, giving to those in need. If commericialism was out of the picture, and they thought about all the unfortunate people who dont have food, shelter, clothes etc, then maybe this world would be a better place. As Michael Jackson once sang " Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me and the entire human race, there are, people dying, if you care enough for the living, make it a better place, for you and for me. "

for me it's equally important. I do not hold one higher than the other. Jesus' birth was important as well as his resurrection. Both go hand in hand.

[> Phil, Thanksgiving ? -- Neysa, 22:29:36 08/14/07 Tue [1] (user-38lcibm.dialup.mindspring.com/209.86.73.118)

I never thought of it as a religious holiday. I know that some people go to church services on that day. But, for a lot of people it is turkey and football day.

For me it is turkey and pumpkin pie... yum!!! No football.

When my dad was alive there was always football and baseball on. He didn't watch it all the time. I must admit I don't miss it. I haven't watched a football or baseball game on tv, in years.
