Subject: NUNS

Barb, asked a very good question on Catie's Forum about nuns dressing casually. What are your opinions about a nuns form of dress. Either casual or traditional. Why do you feel that way.

In school I had nuns who dressed in the traditional post Vatican II, habit. I had nuns who dressed casually. Looking back, I showed the nuns who were in traditional habit more respect. The ones in the casual dress less respect. In the casual dress they became my equal, and most of the time I forgot they were a nun.

I would like to see all nuns in the traditional post Vatican II habit. I don't think it is necessary to go back to the pre- Vatican II habit, like Mother Angelica, of EWTN, made her nuns do. ( maybe she didn't make them do it, perhaps they voted to go back to that habit).

I know that some nuns wear a uniform without the habit. It just seems like something is missing when they don't have that habit on their head.

I guess I should have posted a question about how priests dress. Half the time they don't dress like a priest with a collar. The priest in my church has a twin brother. One afternoon, a few weeks ago, while in town. Walking down the street came, I thought the priests brother. I said hello Henry. He said no I'm Mark. There was Fr. Mark, in shorts and a polo shirt.

About nuns I like them dressed as nuns with a habit. They look more proper and dignified. I don't like the long dress and habit of pre- 1962.

I also think priests should dress in clerical attire.

when I was a kid. Lots of my friends did too. I grew up on a street with a Roman Catholic Church at the top of it and our families befriended him and Father Ruth, who was much older. Father Kelly was such a dreamboat, with Rock Hudson looks! :-)

After the funeral on Wed, my Irish relatives (the ones who were born and raised there) tried to talk my son into becoming a priest. He did the 2nd reading--the one Catie recommended--and they all thought he sounded kinda priestly. LOL

Would you rather your son be a priest or marry and give you grandkids? (Don't say the obvious :) "to follow his heart" ...I mean what would YOU prefer, if given a choice.

I want Billy to have a good, honorable job. In my mind, that means any job that's morally good. I know that prostitution is legal in some areas, so I don't want to say "any job that's legal". Because politics is so full of criminals and criminal acts, I don't want him to be a politician. He might turn out to be the only honest politician in the history of the world, but I think that's not likely.

Priest or Father. Maybe there isn't so much of a difference. :-)

I don't have a preference. I wouldn't want him to be a priest if he didn't want to be one. And I don't want him to have kids if he doesn't want any.

He shouldn't be choosing his career or planning a family by what he thinks I want.

I honestly don't have a preference. I would love grandchildren, but I don't think that I would feel like I missed something if I don't have any. There are always ways to interact w/ kids. OTOH, if I hadn't had my own child, I would be miserable. But grandkids aren't our choice. It's not our life, it's our kids', and they get to choose.

I honestly never thought of Billy as a priest.

Judging by his reaction, I don't think he ever considered it either. He laughed.

His girlfriend said, "Noooo!" :-)

I think Billy likes girls too much to be a priest. He might never had kids, but he loves to have a girlfriend. I don't think he has the constitution required for celibacy. It's not just the physical part of it. Celibacy is a commitment that I think my son would never really want to make. To commit to never having a family of your own (no wife or kids) is huge. It's not an easy thing.

Billy is an only child. I think the life of priest would be especially lonely for him. Many priests, though they don't have a wife or kids or their own, have brothers and sisters. Being an only kid, once we're gone, Billy would be very much alone in the world.

Like my aunt said, "Visitors are nice, but it's not like family."

So I guess after thinking about it, I do have a preference. I would rather see Billy have a family of his own--a wife and kids if he wants them. But it's not really about Priest vs grandkids.

When I was in 7th grade a new young priest Fr. Adam, came to our church to replace the elderly Fr. George, who was retiring.

I had such a crush on Fr. Adam. He was really good looking. I never went to Mass so much in my life! Sadly, he became ill, and was only here seven months, before he had to be replaced.
