Jews are not suppose to be cremated, only buried. I don't know the reason for that....must look it up. I'm not sure what I prefer. The family left behind may want somewhere to "visit" with the deceased. I feel a sense that my dad is still with us when I visit his grave. I know that's foolish but the mind likes to play tricks, doesn't it! My mom is buried, but in Israel where she died. What you reason here about cremation though, makes a good deal of sense.

Your feeling about your Dad is not silly. We all feel that way about our lost loved ones. You are only reacting in a normal way. (Hey you don't you need me to tell you that you are normal did you? lol)

If you will allow me: the Jewish practice of not embalming nor cremating is connected to the resurrection. I'm not 100% clear how, but it is because of the bodily resurecction. Some Jewish sects are more accepting of the cremation but the remains must be buried and not scattered or kept.

Jews are buried to show honour for the body that housed the spirit, and the breath of God. Traditions says that Jews must be reunited with the soil as soon as possible and that is why Jews are usually buried within 24 hours of death. Coffins have no metal, and there are only rope handles and wooden pegs. There are holes at the base of the coffin to allow the body to connect with the earth. All Jews, whether they be rich or poor are buried in a simple wooden coffin. Nowadays there are more Jews being cremated though. No doubt those who are not religious.

Sorry about that. I stand corrected. I was going on the information from our friends who live in Israel. Remember I told about our American friend who died over there and was buried over there? She was buried without embalming and I recall someone mentioned cremation, perhaps something she had wished for herself while in American, but it was a definite no there in Israel. Somehow I had the notion we were told it was because of a Jewish tradition and a ressurection of spirit and body, (which I know is not the same as the protestants belief of Christ returning to earth) So I was obviously very confused. lol sorry! Our friend was indeed buried there in a very plain wooden box and within 24 hours of death. The family actually prepared her body unlike here in the states where a funeral parlor prepares them.
