Subject: Barb, were you Bat Mitvahed?

Hope that's spelled right.

Were the parties after as elaborate then (back in the day :-) )as they are today?

They're little "weddings" today--dinners for 100 people or more at the same places (same food) you would have a wedding reception.

Just wondering if that's something new.

it isn't necessary for girls, and in fact...not all that common. Both of my brothers were of course, Bar Mitzvahed. I remember their Bar Mitzvahs quite well, and they were cosy...not over the top or splashy like some can be. I've attended a few of those.
In the 50's and 60's there could indeed be elaborate Bar Mitzvahs but many were quiet, simple affairs. Bat Mitzvahs were exceedingly rare then. I think Bat Mitzvahs and Sweet 16's are just excuses for a big wing ding! :-#

My cousin who is Catholic and his wife who is Jewish, are bringing up their children in the Jewish tradition. When their daughter Emily, was born they had what was called a 'Name Ceremony' for her. Did you have a Name Ceremony when you were born ? They just had a little boy and named him Samuel.

are a relatively new thing and did not exist when I was born. Jewish baby boys are brought into the world with such ceremony that in recent years more fuss is being made recognize the blessings of having a daughter as well! :-) My goodness, all girls of no matter what faith have earned it, don't you think! :-)

girls always seem to get a raw deal. If I had been born a male. I would have become a Catholic priest. Thus, I was born a female !
