Subject: Did any of you have religious leaders in your family?
My father's father was a Rabbi, one of the first Rabbis in the city of Ottawa, Canada. He came to North America at the turn of the 20th century and landed at Ellis Island. He took his Rabbinical studies in New York City but was called to Ottawa for a position and remained there for the rest of his life. My father was the eldest of 10 children, 9 boys and 1 girl. He was raised religiously but in turn he and my mother raised their children in a reform manner. My father learned at his father and mother's knee that we must honour and respect one another in this world, and not to be ignorant of what the next man/woman represents...their feelings and beliefs. I think my grandfather was ahead of his time for a man in his position, and I honour his wisdom!

No religious leaders in my family........ -- Neysa, 22:03:54 07/23/07 Mon [1] (user-38lci7k.dialup.mindspring.com/209.86.72.244)
just a great uncle who brought shame on the family name. It was in the 1920's and my Great Uncle John, was studying to be a priest. He was sent away to a seminary in Michigan when he was 15. Back then the seminary also had high schools. Two years before he was to be ordained he quit. Even though he was not ordained, years ago to leave the seminary was considered a disgraceful act that only brought humiliation and 'bad luck' to ones family.
Barb, your grandfather and from the other posts I read about your father really were impressive people! You are so blessed to have a rabbi in your family.
I think it is a blessing for any family of any faith to have a family member as a religious leader.

Re: Sort of, in mine... -- Phil from AZ, 00:04:49 07/24/07 Tue [1] (71-38-108-225.phnx.qwest.net/71.38.108.225)
Dad was an altar boy and went to Catholic school as a youngster. He said that he'd gone to church enough then for a life-time. Ironically, he went once in awhile with me. Mom almost never went to Mass, but talked abt the Bible often and encouraged us to read it. Thus, I guess by default, Mom was the spiritual leader of our family.
Dad went to an Episcopalian military academy in High School after his Mom died. By coincidence, his wife attends a Episcopal Church. My sister married into a Methodist family. My brother and I are non-denominational Christians...tho we'd designate ourselves as Prot'sts. The irony here: Mom, who was a Prot'st before marrying my Dad, is the only one among us, who is still Catholic.
Take care, God Bless,
Phil from AZ .

Well, not a direct relative of course. ;-)
I don't think I have any ancestors who were priests or nuns. I know that I don't have any living relatives who are.
Maybe some in Ireland were.

Re: Yes, you pro'bly already know this, Joan, but... -- Phil from AZ, 15:46:45 07/24/07 Tue [1] (71-38-108-225.phnx.qwest.net/71.38.108.225)
...it was a status symbol and a matter of pride to have a priest the family. The matron of the family was particularly pleased. The neighbors envied those who had son bless their Christmas and Easter dinners as an ordained priest.
Economics was also in play here. Until recently, Ireland was a backward, rurual country with very little hope of advancement for the young. Many either went in the priesthood or went abroad to find work. Irish folks who left in the 1950s are so numerous that they are called 'The Lost Generation'. Thus, if a man had a calling for the priesthood, he would not have to worry abt his future, nor would he have to go abroad to work.
Even today, there's element of this on the Emerald Isle. My landlady's daughter lived next door to me in our lil' village in Ireland. She has a brother and 2 uncles in the priesthood. Amazing!
Thus, I'm sure you must have a priest somewhere in your extended family. Take care, God Bless,
Phil from AZ...formerly of Co. Sligo, Rep of Ireland
