It was the biting coldness that stirred her feet into their quickened pace. Her eyes darted over the alley before her and occasionally would light upon a sign and she’d jar violently in a new direction. She didn’t like the feeling that was creeping slowly but deliberately down her spine. She felt spooked and vulnerable and her bare arms were prickly as the hairs stood to provide warmth. Its cold she thought, her voice sounding deeper and more alluring in her own head. The temperature had plummeted in the night and the dew collect and cars was chilled to an almost autumn like feel. Though tangled in the intestines of the city, she could still smell that wonderful crisp scent of evergreens and wet woods on her shoulders. She suppressed a shutter. I could just shift. She considered the option with green eyes still searching for the green street signs that would direct her where she wanted to be. If she did find the energy to shift her thick white coat could be most alluring against the gusts of wind that sometimes crept around the faces of buildings. But a white fox would be very obvious in the darkness of the night and the shadows of the city’s skyscrapers. She let strawberry blonde locks wiggled free from their swept up ponytail as she shook her head. She was cold but she wasn’t stupid. Her lips read the words on the next sign aloud, “North Fletcher” She spurred herself across the street after a white taxi had passed. She could see the illuminated red circle of the underground ahead. She ducked into the colder tunnels with only a moment’s hesitation. The wind abandoned her completely once she’d entered but the damp smell replaced it.

She had heard rumors of this city and stories of his shifting kind. Of course, shifters were always happy to find others like themselves if they didn’t live in an area with an organized society. Her brother, a fox shifter too, had warned her against joining into an pack like this. But Lyla was her own person and could make her own decisions, thank you.
