Author: Rinali and Lilith
Subject: Weyrlings here!

Retired queen Lilith swooped gracefully down from the large slab of stone outside her weyr (her favourite sunning spot), to land beside Rinali, who had recently come from the lower caverns. You are alright?
Yes! We’re neither of us too old for this!
Rinali cleared her throat. “Alright, Weyrlings!” She called, drawing herself up to her full height and placing one hand on Lilith’s right front paw for stability. When all heads were turned towards her, and after the final hubbub of chatter had finished, she addressed them all without shouting.
“Now, I don’t want to have to yell at you, because my voice is strained enough without you lot damaging it even more.” She looked around at them all, mentally counting.
Shalth’s rider is asleep after her trauma. The queen had the measure of all the dragons. They have done flying and must now do firestone. They all seem to be here, but Ith is damaged. Favrianoth tells me that his rider will come.
Firestone? Hmm…can you call a green who’s free? And R’yu’s a dragonhealer?
I have already asked Mesatith to come. And yes, it would seem so.
Mesatith is A’ron’s?
She is. They will demonstrate, but we must still explain.
Thanks, Lil. She patted the paw, and returned to speaking. She was clear and precise, as always.
“D’tir is otherwise engaged, and I have been asked to resume the lesson. For those of you who don’t already know me, I am Rinali, and this is Lilith, who is now retired. We will teach you how to manage firestone, though I apologise for the fact that we cannot demonstrate, due to Lilith’s inability to eat it. A’ron with his green Mesatith will be here shortly, I am told, to demonstrate, but we will manage for now without them.
“I am informed of the incapacitation of Shalth’s rider, and we will see if she joins us. Hythe, you and Ith will be joined by R’yu, rider of blue Favrianoth, who is an excellent dragonhealer. But now I ask all of you to please turn and face that wall.” She gestured to a long, high wall that spanned the side of the Perches and was blackened with scorch-marks from previous Weyrlings.
The woman crossed to what could be termed a small mountain of firestone, and selected two pieces of rock from the pile. She held up the larger one. “This is firestone, and it is too big for your dragon to swallow, and so you must break it, so.” She bashed the piece into the wall, and was left with two smaller pieces, just the right size. “These are an excellent size for your stone to be,” she told them, showing them the three bits of rock.
“Now, you will give them to your dragon, and allow them some time for the stone to be digested. Always tell them to think of their second stomach. Always. If they don’t, then it isn’t a very fun experience. I’ll leave it to you to imagine what eating this stuff and trying to digest it would be like.” She made a face, and placed her pieces back on the pile.
“The wall is there to stop anyone being burnt, because your dragons don’t have the discipline yet to hold the flame in yet. After your dragon has flamed, wait until there is no danger from the others, and go to that pit for them to regurgitate the ash into.” She pointed to a pit at the side of the Perches, and then looked over to Tsuga, addressing her.
“Tsuga. I, Wessae or Talla will teach you and Alestiath how to use a flamethrower later, but for now I need to supervise this lot. You can either watch, or have a free hour.”
She turned back to the others. “Get about ten pieces of firestone and begin, Weyrlings! If you have any trouble, just ask. Don’t try to sort it out on your own. And if either you or your dragon is not confident, then stop. Safety is paramount. Have fun!”
