Karen, you did what you felt was best for everyone in that family, especially the innocent child who could not do for himself. From what you described your friend is a classic battered wife. If she does not get help her life will be a living hell, until it is ended, one way or the other.

Sometimes you have to do the unpopular thing simply because you could not live with yourself if you did not. Hugs on doing what you thought was right, not what was easy.
