To get there we had to ride our bikes across a bridge suspended by cables about fifty feet over Laughery creek. This bridge swung as we raced across...then the dump was on the other side. We would rummage and dig around through all manner of odor, germ ridden, stuff, looking for that one little treasure. Some little discarded nic nac or what cha ma call it. Of course we three little girls had no clue that we could have been taken by an adult, buried in the debris, or be infected with some horrible illness, or poisoned by some chemical. I don't think our parents ever knew we did this.

Then there were road kills. Yes, you read right. Me being the compassionate little soul that I was, I'd ride up and down the paved roads on my bike and scrape up the roadkill for a proper burial at my house. I found it very upsetting that people not only killed them, but they kept on driving over the poor things. I got caught out on that one and think I had a sore hind end to match. My Dad wasn't the type to be amused by what he considered a dangerous activity, and me standing in the road scraping up road kill qualified.

We also damned up Carstettor Creek. During the hot summer months the creek bed would dry up, only to flood at the next rain. We built a four foot barrier across the creek, made out of every rock, piece of junk, clothes, anything we could find. So the next time it rained...here came the water and it built...and built...and built then the pressure of the water sent our little dam hurtling and a nice wall of water went barreling down the creek. COOL....we didn't get caught on that one either : )
