I though of it immediately when I read what you did as a child.......I couldn't remember the name of the movie but the actor was John Hurt and I managed to find a blurb about it on the net. You might want to rent it sometime:

Well-known British producer Jeremy Thomas makes his debut as director with ALL THE LITTLE ANIMALS, (UCR), low in
budget, high in originality. Long ago, now 24-year old Bobby had lost his father in a car crash which also left Bobby a
perpetual child in some ways. But he is certainly not retarded. His mother remarried a chillingly cold, wealthy businessman.
Now she too is dead. The stepfather is maneuvering to get rid of the young man by placing him in an institution -- which is
unnecessary, would harm Bobby no end, and transfer his significant inheritance into the pockets of the villain. Bobby runs
away. In Cornwall he meets by chance a Mr. Summers (John Hurt), one of those genuine originals who have more sense
than most "normal" people. One might call him a semi-hobo de luxe, but not a weirdo. He gathers roadkill and buries the
animals. Equally devoted to beasties, kindred-soul Bobby becomes Mr. Summers's collaborator. The two eventually also
succeed in foiling the nasty stepfather. Quiet, but with moments of suspense, this most likable movie has much feeling and
very good performances. John Hurt scores once more as a simpatico eccentric.
