Subject: Sending you a cyber hug Lisa - you've been through a lot.
In reply to: Lisa 's message, "hello everyone, I have a question about surgery." on 21:01:39 06/16/01 Sat

These are just thoughts as I've never been through anything more serious in the medical realms than having my tonsils removed (although I was eighteen at the time so do clearly recall) and childbirth (once thanks - 48 hours later I figured I'd done an average of maybe four labours so I could stop at one! LOL). But here's what I was thinking. First off the tiredness, the feeling of being "not right" and the depression in hospital are all understandable and will get better as time passes I'm positive. The memory stuff - first have you mentioned it to your doctor? I'm sure you have but that's so easily overlooked and I'd hate to be tossing ideas around about something so serious if your doctor isn't aware of how you feel. Second - big, big hug (gently done) ...you poor thing - this must be frightening for you!

Here's a few thoughts. You've had some pretty heavy duty drugs go through your system for a couple of weeks now - it will take time for your body to clear them out. I think the best thing you can do is what you are doing (aside from what the doctor has said of course) - flush, flush, flush - it'll help I'm sure. You need to ask how long the anastetic (sp?) can take to clear out entirely and if (since it was your spine) you should expect this to take longer than normal. (I'm relating this to a friend that I know who have had an epidural giving birth and somehow they mucked up and the drugs went straight to her head - she was fine but it was very frightening for her). Remember that I'm just tossing thoughts around here in the hope that something might help, not trying to frighten you more at all. My other thought is that when the body undergoes a major stress (operation, child birth, accident etc) there is often a period of slow down and/or rehab afterwards which is your bodies way of saying - rest and get better. I know you're a really active person and that all this is really frustrating for you but you have to take the time to recover, I don't think it can be rushed.

The last thing that comes to mind is - can the doctor give you some memory exercises to work on? Doing them might help you feel better - something positive to focus on.

Other than that here's another hug that I'm sending out to you. You have been in my thoughts often this past week.

Diane.
