Subject: Which timeframe would you choose for the second XF movie?

The rumor winds are blowing pretty strongly in favor of a second XF movie; probably with filming to begin sometime in the fall of 2003 and the movie to be released in November or December of 2004. One of the major rumors about the movie is that it will *not* be a follow-up to the events of season nine but will instead be either a "prequel" to the TV show or an "interep" film, filling in some of the missing time between various XF eps or seasons. Here are some possibilities, keeping in mind that I don't *know* anything, I'm just speculating:
1.) A prequel to the TV show, set in the early 90s with Mulder and Scully as a rookie FBI agent and medical student, respectively. Okay, leaving aside the fact that the entire dynamic of the TV show doesn't make much sense if Mulder and Scully had a history together *before* they met during the events of "Pilot". . .could DD and GA really play a couple of twentysomethings convincingly at this stage of their lives??
2.) A "secret season one" ep. One of the things really devoted X-Philes picked up on over the years was that, according to the official timelines, there was a gap of about six months between the events of "Pilot" and "Deep Throat" and that the MSR apparently had evolved from wariness to respect and even a sort of friendship during that period. . .maybe the second movie would tell us what they were doing during that time. While this is a somewhat better idea than a "prequel", and would allow for any character ever introduced in XF (Deep Throat! Agent Pendrell! Melissa Scully!) to appear in the movie, as they wouldn't be dead yet, you still gotta wonder if DD and GA could really recapture the look and mood of their season one work. And, from a shippers' POV it would suck, because it would be way before the MSR took a turn toward romance.
3.) From the events of "Deep Throat" in season one to the final ep of season five, our dynamic duo's time is pretty well accounted for. But there was a gap of nearly six months between when "The End" aired in May of 1998 and when season six began in November of 1998. Obviously we know what they were doing for *part* of that time; it's when the events of "The X-Files Movie: Fight the Future" took place. But do you really think a quick trip to Anarctica and a single near death experience would keep Mulder and Scully occupied for an entire five-and-a-half-month period, considering that they normally investigated 20 or more cases during a typical seven-month TV season? The second movie could take place immediately after the first one. . .it could even begin with Mulder and Scully walking along holding hands, the way the first movie ended. This way DD and GA would only have to look five years younger, instead of ten (or more) the way they would for a prequel or season one movie. Almost everybody agrees that the 18-month period from November of '97 to May of '99 (season five/the first XF movie/season six) was the absolute highlight of the XF years, and it would be great to recapture the magic of this era. From a shippers' POV, this would be pretty good. . .it would be just after the "almost kiss" of the first movie and at a point when the MSR had evolved to a point of deep friendship and absolute trust.
4.) The movie could take place sometime during the spring of 2000, between any two eps from the second half of season seven (my personal choice would be between "Theef" and "En Ami", but I'm not going to be picky; any time after "Closure" and before "Requiem" would be fine). The vast majority of fanfic currently being written takes place during season seven, so it's clearly where the fans hearts and minds are. And maybe we shippers would finally get to see an all-out love scene between Mulder and Scully. . .something we were denied during *nine* seasons of the TV show and the first movie! Having the actors look younger wouldn't be a problem, as it would only be a difference of a couple of years.
5.) The movie takes place in the summer of 2001, between seasons eight and nine. Mulder and Scully would be "together", they'd have William (they could leave him with Scully's mother while they went off to save the world, or whatever they were doing in the movie) the Lone Gunmen would still be alive. . .and, for those who were fans of Doggett and Reyes, they would have already met and M&S, so all four XF agents could be working together. Pretty good from a shippy POV but having William, Doggett, Reyes, etc. in the movie might make it too confusing for casual viewers and/or former fans who quit watching at the end of season seven.
6.) The rumors are wrong; the movie will take place after the events of season nine.
What I would *like* to see is either option four (summer of 1998) or option five (spring of 2000) as the timeframe for the second movie. What I think is most plasusible is that it will be set in summer of 2001; between seasons eight and nine, which I could handle. I just really hope that the second movie is set at *some* point during the TV show; that they don't go to the extremes of having the movie either be a prequel to the show or a follow-up to the depressing events of season nine.
