Who suffered more didn't matter. He suffered, she suffered, everybody suffered. The difference lay in that he suffered thanks to himself and she suffered thanks to that very same young vampire.
Yea, life is hard for the thick-headed. An eternal uphill battle for reasons not of an individual's choosing. Some are just meant to go against the grain. And more hearts than his own were bloody with slivers because of his habits and conduct.
Did it lessen the offense that he had never intended to spin such a web of hurt? But there had been tell-tale signs, had he paid attention, that the pains he covered inside were bound to string out to his numerous connections and someday they would turn on him as the source of unwelcome suffering.
And he could not blame them anymore.
Everyone picks the nail from their shoe once they start to limp.
Gaze still downcast and spirit smarting from her well-spoken words, he nevertheless shifted closer as she sat, surrendering his icy hand to her delicate hold. How was it that she could bear to touch him? But, propped on an elbow at her side, he was grateful that she could tolerate him even that much. More than she should. Glancing at her, side-long and ashamed, he sat in silence through her reply. Please, don't leave his side. Take that supporting strength away and he wasn't sure he could stand. Love cannot convey...? In the sense that the word was not enough or was it too generous? But if there was even the tiniest bit of love left for him in her, he would cling to it like a forsaken child to a departing mother's skirts. Curling cool fingers around the hand in his, a plea in their gentle hold, he turned wide, all-but-heartbroken eyes up to her. Be honest. "...What do I need to do to make you stay at my side?"
