You enter the hatching sands and gape. The white robe of the Candidate you wear is light, but the hot sands burn through your thin sandals. The great golden Queen before you turns her head to watch you mince towards her eggs. A loud hum is heard and suddenly, the eggs start to rock wildly. Will you Impress?
(Leave your name, age, and gender somewhere in your post.)
((You must be at least 14 Turns to Impress.))

T'ben flew in on Rekoth's back, sliding out of the seat and running onto the sands, searching wildly for Dilly. "Dilly! I'm back!" he called, Rekoth adding a bugle.
    What was that for, Rek?
For Amenth and the new hatchlings to hear.
T'ben grinned for a second, then his face grew more anxious, hoping that Dilly would forgive him for his absence, as he wanted very badly for Rekoth to catch Amenth in the gold's next flight, more for personal reasons than any of the public titles.

She looks around the hatching grounds hoping to be in time for the hatching. Excitment and happiness mixed with nervousness filled her heart as she felt the sand beneith her feet. She smiled slightly as she stood, butterflies in her stomach at the thought of riding dragonback and go inbetween. Then she shock her head roughly. Shouldn't get my hopes up.. she thought but the thoughts stayed in her head as she watched on hopefully.

His dark brown eyes swam with the emotions he didn't deisplay. Hope, wonder, astonishment and joy all filled them. Hope for the dragon he may Impress; wonder for the great dragons of Pern who charred the thread. Astonishment and joy for finally stepping onto the Sands. He took in a deep breath, eyes lingering on the eggs. The main question was...would he Impress at all?
He shook his head stubbornly. Of course he would. He would die if he didn't.-

Adraline flew in from between, trying to shake the penetrating cold from her limbs, hopping stiffly over near the warmth of the Sands, sighing her relief. Her four greens, Honey, Sage, Oregano, and Thyme, flew over to take their perches on her shirt, Honey and Sage getting the coveted shoulder positions while Oregano and Thyme hooked their talons onto her sleeves.
"Guys, calm down," she murmured, her throat producing a low, rich chuckle. The flits refused to be calm, but gave up all semblance of defiance when Xuvth snorted at them.
"We're here to watch the Hatching," she said, eyeing the one Candidate that had arrived.
    Xuvth, why only one?
Search was hard to get into place, and people are straggling in. Don't worry, enough will come.
Reassured by her dragon's guiding force of confidence, she straightened and waved to the lone Candidate on the Sands.

~Hmm. There are so few canidates and so many eggs.~ Halzay thought as she stared at the beautiful clutch. Suddenly she laughs... she had always been told she was too competitive and even now... even here... she's surveying her chances.

A taller boy of fifteen turns strode in, trying not to look as hopeless as he felt. He could still hear the voices of his family ringing through his head, yelling at him. Just because he had got it into his head to go to the Weyr. Blue eyes shut for a moment, and he took a deep breath, eyes opening again. One hand came up and ran through his brown hair, and then he walked a few steps closer to the Dragon Eggs. What would it be like to Impress a Dragon? • *quietly walks into the grounds, her mind filled with memories of her family* -- Tara Lynn, 21:06:38 12/16/01 Sun
She is but 14, average height, with angled hair framing her face and blue-green eyes sparkling with something crossed between tears and happiness. She suddenly gets a chill and wraps her father's jacket around her tightly. Her mind starts whirling with memories and she collapses onto her knees clutching the saphire necklace her mother gave her for her 13th turn birthday. The jacket and the necklace are the only physical items she has left of her wonderful family, but the memories linger crystal clear in her mind. One of the most vivid ones is of her and her family sitting by the fire just talking in December,1 turn ago. It was right before the plauge hit her village. All of her family caught it except for her and her then 11 year old sister Kari. Her father, youngest sister Amii who was 3, youngest brother Kaine who was 5, and second youngest brother who was 8,Andrew, all got a horribal case of it. Somehow her mother caught it but remainded fairly healthy. Kari already had a hint of sickness so they had to leave the small village and journey to a place where health was more than just a dream. On the long journey, Kari got too week to continue and was left with a nice small family in a village Tara Lynn does not remember the name of. Tara Lynn continued on to this place and her biggest wish is for her family to somehow find her.

Krovera walked into the sands. She looked more like 18 turns insted of her mere 15. Her white robe swreled around her legs and feet. THe veiw of the sands gave her a bad memory.
"Yea marm impressed." the four turn old Krovera yelled as her mother embraced
the small green dragon. The green was injudered and weak but it still managed to crawl to her
mother. "Nirith oh Nirith," her mother was saying crying into the soft green hide of her dragon.
~Theses sands are sooooo warm~ Nirith said to her mother. Suddenly Nirith's hide went paler
and paler untill it was almost grey. "NIRITH NO," her mother yelled as Nirith slipped between for
her first and last time. "NO DON'T LEAVE ME," her mother crid sobbing as the dragons let out a
keen. Krovera ran as fast as her fat four turn old legs could move her. "Marm, it'll be okay," Krovera
said trying to comfert he sobbing mother. Lena leaned on Krovera crying into her daughters
sholder. "Gone she's gone," and slowly Kroverafelt the life drain out of the one person she loved...
her mother. "Marm come back, please," she said quietly in vain to her mother. Krovera sat down on
the hot sands and began to cry, harder then she ever had in her life. Her tears caused steam when
    the hit the sands.
Krovera lifted her head and found that she was crying. Lifting her head and trying to put on a brave face she used her thinck red hair to wipe her hazel eyes free of tears.

  • the hatching -- Vilaya, 18:54:18 12/13/01 Thu
I rushed into the hatching ground hoping that there was a chance, even a small chance that any eggs were left. I calmed down when I saw the clutch. After getting over my fear I turned and looked out into the crowd... and slowly drifted into memories...
"Sylent." I asked, "Is there anything more to life? You are my husband to be. I would think I have it all... All the luxuries I want and kindness from the one I love... but they do not please me. I... I feel as if each time I get close to figuering out what it is that is missing it leaves like the air off a drag... That's it! I no what I must do! I shall go to the Eaastern Weyr for the hatching. You will go to won't you?" To my saddness I shall never see Sylent again for he had duties as any respectable son of a hold owner would... And I am now to be banished from his life for his love was true but how could he love a girl who could just walk out on his love.

The young green bounds in, her rumpled and exausted to-be rider trailing behind her. The dracling lies down suddenly with a soft thud in the Sands, raising a cloud of fine white dust.
    The Queen has hatched.
Polath remarks placidly once the dust had settled around her once more. Astra, shocked out of her stupor for a moment, glances around the area, trying to locate the lucky girl. Seeing Koryn with the Junior Queen, she flashes the other a brief smile of congratulations. After watching Zapith hatch and Impress, Astra prods the still emerald form infront of her with one booted toe.
"Can we go now? I really need to get some sleep."
Rolling to her feet in unspoken agreement, the dracling steadies herself against Astra for a moment. She then realised she was just as fatigued as the girl, for Hatching had taken its toll.
    Where do we go?
"I think we're supposed to sleep in the Weyrling Barracks. Their this way."
She motions with one freckled hand down the hallway. Polath dips her broad wedge shaped head in an unmistakable nod, and they amble along to the Barracks.

  • ~Koryn watched, jaw slack as the words resounded in her head~ -- Koryn, Kamath and Pheonix, 21:24:32 12/10/01 Mon
~Every instant was so slow. The Queen Egg started cracking as Pheonix broke his leash. Koryn had turned toward the canine for only a moment to chide her liberated companion, but found him sitting, watching the eggs. She had turned around as the Queen stumbled foward towards the femme. The gold looked up at her before getting up onto her feet, watching her lifemate's eyes as the Impression was made. The junior Queen's name was still in her thoughts, and she was still up in the clouds, completely elated, when the furry little canine, rested a paw on the Queen, wagging it's tail and giving a short bark of approval. The wedge head angled down, bits of sand and egg still clinging to the wet hise. Kamath gave her draconic grin as Koryn proceeded to brush off some of the shell.~

    [Koryn?]
    {Yes?}
    [What's that little furry thing?]
    {It's my dog, his name is Pheonix}
    [Did he Impress you too?]
    {No, I found him. We need to get you fed and cleaned, and I'm sure that the others will be waiting for the rest of the hatchlings}
    [Yes, I'm very hungry]

~The Queen paused before rising to her feet and the small canine scrambled up between the two neck ridges where Koryn would sit and fly Thread with her Impressed in later days. The pup was only a small white blur on the Queen's back, but already it was another new bond between the pair. Pheonix instantly fell asleep, balancing easily on the gold's back as she stood. The air of grace and agility she had portrayed before returned, and the pair walked off the sands. Koryn smiled, her dreams had, for once, come true...~

I'll be flying quite soon, R'tor. And I'll be big, just wait. The bronze said matter of factly, stretching his limbs with well oiled ease.

"Sure you will, even though you're not even two days old. I believe you, Zircath." He beams at his magnificent partner affectionately, glad that he had someone to share with and love. His eyes travel across the sands and he sits lazily, cross legged in the warm sand. Others had family arriving, but Zircath was all the family he needed. Wonder what my father'd say if he knew I was here? Probably something about the dragon's muzzle bein' as long as my nose. He thinks absently, letting himself travel back. But Zircath wasn't just another dragon, he was the dragon, the only one R'tor ever wanted, or could ever have.

"And now I can even talk with others, I have such a peace with myself and my dragon." He muses aloud, glad to watch the pairings take place.

  • She stumbles in, her oddly trailing movements leaving furrows in the sands... -- Unu, 22:22:15 12/06/01 Thu
A foot weary of travel snags on some loose stone and the girl loses her balance, toppling into the sand. Heaving herself up among mutters and brushings, she snarls at herself for already dirtying her robes. Glancing at the others, she attempts to curtsy prettily in apology, sighing at her less than punctual appearance.

I'm here now. Mayhaps late is better than none. But maybe they've all Impressed. She heaves a sigh as she glances about, eyes sweeping the surroundings with an unknown hunger. There were still Candidates, she noted with relief, all females like herself. No doubt they had been here much in advance, which secured them a quicker knowledge of the eggs, exactly the fissures to search for when it was time to witness a hatching. Did any Egg claim any Rider? Was that true? Was this the level ground, where nothing save merit mattered? Not even breeding? She hoped so, because her blood was something to hide, sneer at,bury, and boil alive. If it came to blood, she might as well dive into the caverns of ice than to come here. Heager face darkens with the very idea of her father, the jeering Gainop with his pudgy unscrubbed face.

Instinctively she curls to herself, muttering and whispering the promises that held her so long against the anger of her fifteen turns. The other girls, they could hold their heads high and be confident in their Impressions. She needed a grip on herself to be confident of standing up straight. Braving the turmoil within her, she musters a cheerful hello, not really centered on anything. The nest consumes her vision like a flame to a new pile of brush, and she heads closer, enticed and hypnotized. Her eyes fill with the wonder of the eggs, and the crescent half smile she had trembled upon entering waxes full as her eyes drink everything in.

  • Anxiety... -- Astra, 21:57:44 12/06/01 Thu
The waiting was becoming unbearable for the girl, seeing as patience was not one of her virtues. Fear and doubts about not Impressing clogged her mind, and she struggled not to let it become visible. She wipes sweat-moistened palms on her plain white Candidate robe, her apprehension replaced with a consuming dread. There couldn't be too many Greens left, and there were plenty of girls. But there was the Queen still unhatched...She clutched at that feeble hope, yet even as she did she knew it was futile. The daughter of small time holders didn't Impress queens. She would be incredibly lucky to Impress at all, she reminded herself. And yet she couldn't shake the hope for the Queen...

"Oh look, Gormath! Arkia, Jumi and Yriu have Impressed!" ~Yes, I suppose so. Do you wish you had gotten a green instead of me?~ Gormath wanted to know. "No way! Don't ever doubt that I don't want you, Gormath, I do! You're the only dragon for me, bronze, brown, gold, what color, doesn't matter!" ~Okay. If you're sure. Don't answer! I know you're certain.~ "Alright Gormath. Now let's watch the rest of the Hatching." Thaia waved quickly to Janva and Koryn, not seeing Lexa anywhere. She wondered where the Weyrleader was. Sighing wistfully she wondered if she'd ever have her own weyrmate... ~Don't be silly! What green couldn't resist me?~ Laughing softly, Thaia turned to watch.

  • Smiles as K'man impresses Brunth... -- Astra, 13:43:14 12/06/01 Thu
Now that only girls were left standing on the Hatching Sands, her doubts about Impressing multiplied. If she didn't Impress, the only option left for her would be to return to the small Hold of her birth. Stiffening slightly as she remembers the taunts of her brothers, she decides she must Impress, or never be able to face them. Shifting her lightly shod feet on the burning sands, she forces her mind back to the remainder of the clutch. Images of herself riding a dragon, her mother's pride that her single daughter would stand on the Hatching Sands, her brothers mocking her ambitions, and the Eggs before her all melted together and flowed through her mind. Lips in a taut white line, she awaits the rest of the Impressions.

  • ~Koryn grinned as the brown Impressed, leaving only the girls~ -- Koryn, 13:14:42 12/06/01 Thu
~There wasn't any doubt that most of the girls still left on the Sands would probably make good Queen riders, including herself, but which one would be chosen? She ran her fingers through the short shock of black hair, blue eyes showing the prolonged anxiety she, as had all the others, had been going through. Her mood became pensive again as she shrank back into her thoughts, stewing over each one as it came into her mind. The thought of leading a Weyr, hopes of Impressing the Queen, and the doubts of not Impressing at all were melded and reeled in her mind. Images and phantasms of her friends and family, all in the caravan, flashed through her mind. Where were they now? Would they be proud of her? If she didn't Impress, what would she go back to? Back to the endless days of riding, walking, riding, walking, helping push carts out of mud puddles, and walking some more. That was not where she wanted to end up in her life. She knew what she wanted to do, and she was going to do it. No matter what happened, she knew that she would become a dragonrider. that in mind, she smiled at the others, waiting for her time.~

  • Pacing and muttering, the boy tries to clear his head... -- Kuman & Arkia, 09:44:53 12/06/01 Thu
Gone absolutely as white as his Canidate's robes, he keeps any sort of thoughts to himself, wishing at all costs not to sound impatient, or be found wanting. He wasn't imaptient, he told himself, not really. He was just nervous, scared almost.
Scared? A small voice inside him asked. Don't be, don't be. You needn't be scared, not at all. This is the best day ever, enjoy it here and now, Kuman! The voice gains momentum, pummeling his self doubt and worry into a cloud of haze and forgotten, wasted worry. He smiles, almost at a sense of ease, his tenseness leaving him as he smiles at the others. The rest of the other Canidates were female, and he couldn't help but notice it. What worry was that of his, though? He knew Arkia could hold her own, she had for so many years out at the farm. All that was left was Impression, that was all there was at all.

Arkia relaxes as she sees the color return to Kuman. He really needed to loosen himself sometimes, he could get so worked up. Not that she wasn't, she admitted to herself wryly. The hatching sure did a number on nerves. Feeling a tremor of excitement, she grins at the others, wishing them luck and the best. Never once did she begrudge the newly Impressed pairs, for she felt that if they had Impressed, they deserved it. Her body does a half-swoon, and she frowns at herself, why now? Was she getting weak on herself now? She didn't want to think about fainting on the sands, fainting was the furthest thing from her mind and she put that to her body fiercley. It had never come upon her before to do it, she wasn't the silly, swooning type. But perhaps this wasn't a faint, perhaps it was sensing something, feeling and tasting the tension in the air as it ran in shocking currents across her veins. Trembling with joy and trepidation, her gaze centers on the rocking nest.

~However, her doubts were becoming real to her as well. Ignoring them lest she give in and completely abandon her hopes, she watched as again the circle was closed, saving room for the new candidate who had just arrived. So far there had been 4 hatchings, but no browns had yet to break the mottled shells, and the Queen still showed no sign of coming into the world. She smiled at the other girls and Kuman, sensing that everyone was having their doubts....~

  • Entrance... -- Astra, 21:44:56 12/05/01 Wed
The slightly disheveled girl of almost 18 turns dashes in, almost frantic amber eyes skimming over the Eggs. She visibly relaxes when she notices there was still enough Eggs left for her to have a chance at impressing. Straightening, she brushes a few strands of flame colored hair that had escaped from her hasty braid and strides over to the clump of fellow Candidates. By then her normally carefully maintained guard was up once more. She really mustn’t do that anymore. Standing still, the heat of the almost scorching sand struck her labor hardened feet, and she only barely stopped herself from fidgeting. Then she caught sight of something that was quite unexpected to her. The mottled shell of the Queen Egg, whole. She had sincerely believed the little Queen would have hatched by the time she got there, but apparently she was wrong. In that brief moment, her hopes soar wildly. Could she, the daughter of small time Holders, Impress a Queen? But then she crushes them down again. Of course not. She must get hold of herself. She would be unbelievably lucky to Impress at all, she reminded herself. But hope still persisted...She had just as much a chance as anyone to Impress a queen! With that thought, though, she almost jumped in her loose white Candidate robe. The Queen! She had forgotten to pay her respects to the Queen! To her, that was almost unforgivable. Catching herself from dashing over to the magnificent Queen dragon, she pauses, taking several deep breaths, then strides over to her. The ruddy freckled face had gone pale with the fear she would accidentally insult the beautiful creature, mother of the eggs. With one last deep breath she stutters,
"Hello. I'm Astra. I'd like to Impress, and I just wanted to say even if I don't, I'm really honored to be even allowed on the Hatching sands where the Eggs of such a beautiful Queen are due to hatch."
She manages a weak smile, metally berating herself for stuttering, and hoping she didn't sound like too much a country bumpkin. Mouth dry and palms distinctly moist against her white-robed sides, she returns to her place in the know of Candidates.

Janva's breath caught in her throat as she watched the first Egg Hatch, revealing a bronze. The flits had once more perched on her shoulders, each unusaually quiet for a moment, before humming a few pitches higher then the Dragons watching. Janva smiled when Thaia Impressed, and she watched eagerly for the next Egg to break open, revealing the hatchling inside. It was to bad that Thaia hadn't gotten the Queen - Thaia had deserved her. She glanced over at Koryn nervously, as Koryn was really the only other person on the Sands that she knew. She gulped, and took a few steps backward nervously. If a hatchling came for her it could see her pretty easily... And she was still nervous about if she even had a lifemate waiting for her in one of the eggs...

~They fit together she thought, wtaching as Thaia burst into tears, smiling. She turned back as the female Candidates subconsiously closed the gap in the half circle where Thaia had previously stood. The keen blue orbs watched each expression, fear, uncertainty, anxiety, and the girl who lived in her world where everything went right. Xuxa seemed quite sure that she's Impress the Queen, and that air of superiority that she held was unnerving and procured much anger from the 17 Turn old femme. There was only one male now on the Sands, Kuman, so the odds were most definitely in his favor, although for her the odds weren't so nicely stacked. She had been mentally calculating the odds that stood against her, though her newfound optimism kept her from seeing them as being threatening. She would Impress, she had no doubts on that matter, the only thing she really wanted to know was when, and who she would become lifemates with. The Queen Egg still refused to move, crack or budge. Pheonix had taken to sitting in the sand, hunched close to the wall, watching the dragons. He didn't seem scared of them, just curious, but a knowledgable curiosity that made him keep his distance from the creatures that towered so far above him at that point in time. Koryn turned her attention back to the Queen Egg along with the rest, watching, waiting....~

  • Crouching, Yriu's eyes follow the newly Impressed pair out... -- Yriu & Jumi, 08:30:53 12/05/01 Wed
She sighs happily, feeling her heart lift at the sight of the joined minds. Smiling, her gaze rivets again on the eggs, lank hair beginning to flutter and flag in the relentless wind as she lowers her short frame to get a better look at each egg. One of them, the short, direct woman reasoned, just one of them could be for her. You never knew. Breathing in deeply, her mind travles across the eggs, searching, finding one that could hold for her the mystery she had been pondering. The mystery of lonely nights, of having only Jumi to talk to, of why Jev'ess and Rydenkth had died without each other. Taking a deep breath, she begins to realize just how much Impressing would mean, just how truly important it was.A realization that had come only now, without your lifemate, you would die. With your lifemate, forever. And that meant forever, not an empty word or promise in the least. And the more she thought on it, the more she liked the sound of it. She would figure out her mystery yet.

Would she have enough in her to Impress and solve that mystery?

Jumi squeals in delight at the sight of the first to hatch. A baby was always a bit awkward looking, but something to see and love. She couldn't wait to find out if one of them was for her, and she trills and tosses her head back and forth. Many didn't know it about her, but Jumi had an intelligent, caring side that she didn't get to show many people. On the outside, it looked like kind, naive innocence, she was lost in her own world to most folk. But something was there, some caring urge that needed the nudge and prod of a lifemate to bring to everyone's attention.

She tied the leash to an outcropping on the far wall, away from the eggs so Pheonix wouldn't be trampled under the claws of the hatchlings, who would be running for their lifemates. the bronze symboled luck, good luck for the coming hatching, but luck for who? "But Jenda, what can I do to make father love me?" "Nothing less than Impressing a queen on the sands, love."

"That's Ginny's queen, Thaia. She's a magnificant rider, the best of them all." Maybe I can be like that someday...

Almost without knowing what she was doing, Thaia stepped forward in front of the other Candidates (slightly) and tried to think to the queen in the egg. Come out soon, come out, and when you do, come to me! Without thinking she made a tiny croon to the egg, as if coaxing it out. Then, snapping out of her reverie, she stepped back, but she wasn't embarassed. There was a fire and determination in her eyes to get the queen that wasn't there before.

~Her thoughts were divertd as she watched the newest Candidate scowl at Pheonix. Hearing the comment, the brightness of her mood darkened slightly and she watched the girl. Pheonix snarled and crouched, apparently going to try and scare the Candidate. Koryn backed out of the circle, turning to the canine and clicking her tongue. She had trained the pup to obey a few commands, and he knew the sound of her voice, as well as what command went with each noise she made. The black haired Candidate glared at the girl in a silent warning before addressing the canine, who was still snarling and snapping at the girl.~
    "Nix, side."
~The canine relenquished his ground, trotting back to the femme. She turned her attention back to the Queen egg, still resting motionless between the talons of the mother, watched and protected. Pheonix was now happily playing in the sand on the end of his leash, oblivious to stranger once more. Koryn had not quickly forgotten about it, but set it aside as a minor problem, the coming Impression taking up most of her thoughts as the faint humming reached the untrained ears. The canine stopped, cocking his head to the side and pricking the white ears foward. koryn watched her companion before returning to her previous thoughts. To Impress the Queen would be so grand, to have her dreams come true. Koryn gave a soft sigh, beginning to doubt, but quickly pushed her negative thoughts away, concentrating, almost trying to will the Queen to Impress her, though she knew it wouldn't work. The candidates were starting to make their way toward the eggs, all of them anxious, but mostly the girls. Every one of the females had hopes to Impress the Queen, but only one would. Maybe I'll get my chance now...I can only pray. And I'd make a good Weyrwoman. she thought, gaining a little confidence. She saw the Weyrwoman, Dilly, walk in, and knew the Hatching would start soon. Oh please, please let the Queen be for me... of course though, she would be happy with whatever dragon she got, right? But with Hatching so near, she couldn't help but dream, now could she? Making sure her Candidate's robe was immaculate, she knelt down on the rough stone, paying her respects to the wonderful, beautiful, intelligent creatures she knew would soon step out of the mottled eggs. Thaia sighed. She had come to see what was happening everyday possible, and now the Hatching was finally here! She hoped for the Queen...but... It didn't look like there would be much (scratch that) Any competition for the golden queen. After all, none of these girls could compare to her. She was after so much better than any of them. She had been taught by the best teachers and was of course so very pretty. She was smart too, and cunning. All these things, she felt, made her superior to most people. Xuxa's parents were small, but very well to do holders. They only gave her the best and that's what she expected from every one. Since her birthing day Xuxa had gotten whatever she wanted, no matter what it took to get it, it was always hers eventually. And right now what she wanted was to be a dragonrider. A queen rider, to be exact and she was going to be one. No matter what. She sneered as she peered at them through black eyes. They were nothing compared to her. There was no way any of them stood any chance of impressing the gold dragon while she was around. And well, if they did, daddy would take care of it. This was going to be the easiest thing she ever did.*

  • His long strides whisk him across the sand, and he hopes that he is not too late for the hatching... -- Rytor, 12:11:00 12/02/01 Sun
His head swings around as he catches sight of the nest. Striding over, he surveys the clutch eagerly, though he tries to let little emotion show in his indigo gaze. Spreading his hands across the clutch, he examines them to assure himself that he hasn't missed a beat. His white robes billowing behind him, he finds a strange elation welling from the darkness within him, eating away at the black lonliness.

The sight of the eggs nestled in the crooks of the nest sparks tenderness in him, and a smile creeps across his face despite himself. He nods approvingly as he searches to find a place to sit and wait, the wind buffeting his swatch of dark mahogany curls. Gazing around, he notices that most of the other Canidates are female, and shrugs his broad shoulders at this.

I know what I'm here for, to Impress. That's what I need to do, so that I never walk alone again. If one of you will have me. He adds to the eggs, smiling at himself. Rytor, or "Hawkbeak" as his friends knew him in the village, was never usually one for smiling. He was called Hawkbeak for the very reason that his hooked nose resembled...well...a hawk's beak. Never smiling, that was an exageration, but a smile seldom flickered the frown line that creased his forehead most of his eighteen turns. He turns, as usual, to the inside of himself, lost in the depths that he had created in his years of travel, barriers and crevasses, oubliettes and ledges that lined and outlined his very heart and soul. Perhaps having a lifemate, a great partner of scale, wing, and sinew could flood those dark pits of stark terror and utter desparation, buoying him up from his solitude and withdrawal into the warm embracing sunlight. The link could be made, he decided, if he could learn to trust a partner above all others.

Appearing to go into a sort of trance to the outside, he keeps part of himself surfaced to wait and watch for any signs of movement from the eggs, stirrings of his own future.

  • Sits against the wall -- Thaia, 21:43:05 12/01/01 Sat
Closing her eyes gently, Thaia tried, not very successfully, to put all thoughts of dragons out of her mind. Oddly enough, her thoughts were not directed this time toward the queen that lay in the egg, but another queen, long ago.

She had been four, travelling to Benden Hold with her mother, for some of Benden's famous wine that her father liked so much. "Yes, everyone knows that Benden wine is far considered the best," her mother had said laughing. "But I've always prefered Telgar, myself. I rather do have odd tastes though." The man chuckled and handed her mother five bottles of the beverage. She had looked at them, admiring the sparkles. "You know how Then gets, he distrusts the runnerbeasts, says they ruin the quality! He likes everything hand-delivered." Then she had heard a dragon's cry, and had let out one of her own, frightened. "Don't cry Thaia, it's a dragon, a queen, ridden by the best rider of them all, Ginny. She was the one who first restored dragonkind to save us from Thread." She had looked up at the sky and watched the beautiful queen flap her great wings with a crack, pounding against the air. From that moment, she had known, though it had lain dormant in her hear until her stepmother had told her that...well, she had known she wanted to be a DragonRider of Pern.

Abruptly the memory stopped, and she was back in Eastern Weyr, sitting against the wall. Hungrily she stared at the Gold egg, but quickly averted her eyes, as if she had committed blasphemy. You have nothing to be ashamed of... a voice seemed to say withing her head. Quietly she straightened her head, looking at the egg. She had nothing to be ashamed of. "I want the queen and I won't deny it, but I must not think of it," she said under her breath. She stared at the rest of the eggs, calming her mind and just taking a minute to enjoy their beauty.

She entered again, once again felling the panging in her chest as she approached the Queen Egg. Tura on her left shoulder, Ekhet flapped over to claim her other. Each began to chirp, almost as if catching up on what the other had been doing. Janva looked at the flitters with a grin, before her orbs trailed back to the Egg, and then slowly going over to all the others. Did one of them hold her life-mate? The one who would forever be with her?

  • ~Koryn sidles in, Pheonix at her heels~ -- Koryn and Pheonix, 12:23:46 11/30/01 Fri
~Koryn watched as the other girls made a half circle around the egg, allowing room for new Candidates, every so often reaching out to stroke the smooth surface of the shell, their eyes almost glazed in their thoughts. Her thoughts probably resembled their own, the dreams of riding through clouds astride a magnificent gold, leading an entire Weyr in fighting Thread, the deadly menace she had wanted to stop for so long now, the menace that took the life of one of her friends. The blue eyes were distant, reflections of the past and hopeful future reeling in her head. She was usually very realistic when she set her goals, being more apt to pursue goals she knew she could reach before setting higher ones. However, all thoughts of keeping her hopes realistic had left her when she's walked upon the scorching sands, touched the Queen egg, not wanting to touch it lest she shatter the mottled shell, it had looked so fragile at first appearance. Her dreams had influenced her thinking, and she let them, dropping into the shadows to think of all the possibilities for long periods of time. Stop living in fantasy, you know very well it won't get you anywhere at all...She chided herself mentally, snapping out of her daze, eyes still locked on the Queen egg. The was a tugging on the strap of her sandal, and she looked down only to see Pheonix up to his wild antics again. He chased his tail until he fell over, dizzy, the jade orbs always shining their curious and intense green, as if he was hiding something that you knew as well, but you had just forgotten what it was. The canine halways had that look about him, and koryn admired the pup; he never seemed to care what people thought of him and, though it seemed to be just his nature, she admired her companion in that aspect, wishing she had the trait. People's words had often hurt her, but she, through Pheonix, had learned to try not to let it get to her. Once more she shook herself from her thoughts, clicking her tongue as she ambled off to the half-ring of girls, positioning herself between two of them as pheonix resumed playing in the sand, now on the end of his leash, staked in the ground by a stick he'd previously unearthed. She reached out again and let her hand rest on the hardened shell. This was no fragile creature, that she was sure of...~

  • Gazing -- Yriu & Jumi, 23:05:47 11/29/01 Thu
The short and direct Yriu sits and watches the scape with her patient dark gaze. She smiles at the young and the eager who flit in and scamper for a place to watch the hatching. Her eyes drop to her own white Canidate's robes, and she brushes the fabric absently. Did this mean she was part of it all? Would she really have a crack at Impressing a dragon? It was so hard to believe, yet here she was. The hot sand beneath her touch confirmed the fact, as well as the almost insistent breeze that grazed her cheeks and whipped sand in mildly irritating gusts across her thin fabric clad arms.

"Yriu, whatcha thinkin' about?" Jumi's innocent gaze swims into her vision, the younger woman's long hair draping across one shoulder.

"My twenty three turns alone. And my first days on my own, after Jev'ess and Rydenkth died." She says simply, not letting her gaze focus on Jumi.

"Oh." The younger girl slumps back at this simple answer, unsure where to proceed. The trouble with Yriu, Jumi decided, was that she was too direct and no one knew where to take things with her. Watching the sun dance across the hatching sands, Jumi fidgets in anticipation. A dragon would be something, a dragon would share the sky with her.

Yriu continues to search for something, anything, in the surrounds. Her lank hair and rather square frame give testament to her solidity, nothing short of a fire would move her from her self appointed sentinel station. Jumi begins to sift absently through the sand, sending puffs of dust and grains out into the wind. Yriu's eyes follow the path the grains take, before turning ever to the nest. The time was soon, and she would not miss it.

  • Turns her head -- Thaia, 22:44:47 11/29/01 Thu
Thaia turned her head as she saw Kuman and Arkia come in. K'man? Would that be what Kuman's name would sound like shortened? She looked at the vast panoply of eggs in front of her. She sighed and that was all it took to quickly lure her into feeling sorry for herself. I don't even have a fire lizard, can't I have a dragon? Maybe even the Queen? she thought. No! I've had just as troublesome a past as most here, I won't complain, I will try my hardest and that is all I can do. And I would be a good Weyrwoman... She said the last mostly to comfort herself. Straightening up, she walked up to the Candidate's ledge to await the Hatching.

  • Return to the Sands -- Kuman & Arkia, 20:08:57 11/29/01 Thu
The girl returns, her stride carrying her swiftly across the sand. She just wanted to be near the eggs, she couldn't handle the tense anticipation very well if she couldn't at least see them. As they swing into her steel gray gaze, she becomes slightly more relaxed, and her shoulder muscles uncoil visibly. They were safe, nothing had befallen them. It was a feeling she couldn't explain, she wanted to watch the eggs hatch, and see young dragons. She had only seen grown ones before. With a saitied grin on her face, she settles down to watch, resting her arms on her knees and letting the wind assault her shock of deeply red hair.

Kuman follows, his thoughts dwelling on the event before them. There were so many girls here, it was a wonder why. He voices a comic thought to himself, and doesn't realize it's aloud.

"What if I Impressed the Queen? Imagine me, Kuman Whyfar, Weyrwoman! I can see it now! I'd look so good with gold!" Half to himself and half to the eggs he voices this interesting ponder. He chuckles to himself, the lighthearted comment giving him reason to loosen up his tense nerves.Joke cracking was his very big tendency, it helped him to think and exist. He was anticipating and worrying, which was another tendency of his. Gray eyes scan the surroundings as he watches the females, his sister among them, circle and stare at the nest. Arkia never mentioned the Queen Egg to him, she just wanted to get away from WatchSouth town and get out safely. He smiles as he thinks about the adventures he and a dragon could have together, and the bonding that would be second nature.

My Rider my Soul. The inscription he remembered seeingf somewhere flashes across his thoughts, and the concentration on the clutch fastens further on him as he practically wills them to hatch.

*She shifted uncomfortably on the hot sands. She was getting tired and restless. She watched the other candidates come and go from the sands. There was going to be some pretty stiff competition here. She wanted so badly to impress the queen.* Just like every other girl here *She added to herself and sniffed. But, it was true, she had always admired the weyrwomen and all the other gold riders. They always seemed like such brilliant women and she wanted to be like one of them badly. But, she would be happy to be accepted by any of the precious creatures.*

  • ~*~Walks in~*~ -- Thaia, 23:13:08 11/28/01 Wed
She walked in and sat with her back against the wall, staring quietly at the Queen egg. She couldn't help it, it was like something compelled her to see it as long as she could...before it might be gone to another rider. She bit her lip, knowing that she wanted the Queen for herself as she had never wanted anything before. But of course, she supposed any dragon would be fine. Be a realist! she told herself. But her heart wouldn't let her. I would cut off my hair so I could be a dragonrider, that Queen's rider. she winced, knowing that her hair was basically the only classical feature of beauty about her. She would stay back from the egg this time, she had had her turn touching it, she would let others. Golden egg? Do you hold my lifemate? My future? I can only hope- she tried to thwart the idea, but it resurfaced. You aren't the only one who wants that egg, Narathaia! she rebuked herself. Yes, and I wish Koryn and Janva and Arkia and all the others the best of luck, but I can't help wanting it, somehow. Dreamily she let her dreams go, imagining herself as Weyrwoman of High Reaches and seeing the golden dragon she road proud and tall beside her. With another Candidate's oohs and aahs at the egg, she was snapped out of her reverie. Once more she glanced longingly at the golden egg, then turned her eyes downward.

  • Befriending Imagination -- Yriu & Jumi, 22:22:50 11/27/01 Tue
The short compact young woman of twenty three turns strides across the sands, pads of her feet oblivious to the heat. She had walked many a road barefoot, this had no difference to it. She casts her no-nonsense gaze at the eggs, her own hard shell of being softened at the sight of them.

Usually only the beautiful people come here and Impress. The exceptionally pretty ones become Weyrwomen, everyone knows these to be universal facts. I came here to prove that nasty mess wrong, at least the Impression part. Weyrwoman might be better left as a half dream. A herder's child with a shearing blade as a trimming device can go far! Maybe one of them eggs holds my lifemate. Perhaps I might finally know what they want me to DO with the life they've given me. Jev'ess and all of them always knew, but I didn't. Not until now. A green, perhaps, like my poor brother? Rydenk was a nice enough one, and they were so...together. If it is ever like that... She shudders at the thought of a mental blending, eyes roving hungrily across the clutch, as though to pick out the egg for her. Her smile forms quickly as the sands brush the inglorious chopped black hair from her face. Suddenly, a hailing cry brings her from her reviere.

"Yriu! Cousin! Wait for me!" The gasps and winces of Jumi meet her ears as the younger woman leaps quickly and gracefully across the sands to join her.Yriu sighs sadly, even when in pain Jumi looked elegant. It took her hours to achieve any sort of social acceptability. " I decided against Dolphin Hall. I want to Impress, to know the Air!" Jumi continues, violet eyes sparking quietly at her own dreams.

"Then, cousin, we stay to Impress." She catches Jumi gazing reverently at the golden Egg and sighs heavily. That was the trouble, Jumi got her hopes up so high, her dreams could climb the wind. "Look at them all, aren't they wonderful?" Yriu says gently, tugging on her cousin's arm. They stride gently away, to give the Eggs room. Suddenly, Jumi snatches from Yriu's hold and races to the Egg.

She touches the warm shell gently, pretending not to hear her cousin's calls. She had to see this Egg, knew it was special. Everyone kept coming to it. But her eyes flick curiously to the other eggs, and she touches those nearby as well, smiling to herself. Yriu might do well to sit and wait her turn, but sometimes waiting meant missing out. And watching the eggs was definitely something of an experience, they were all so different. A smooth tendril of pale blond hair sweeps forward, and Jumi pushes it away impatiently. Dismayed, she watches the other young girls circling the Egg hungrily, like the coyotes who watched for a ripe chicken. A strange flush of jealousy wells in her, but she shoves it down and steps away at last, kissing her forefinger and placing it at the edge of the nest.

  • Backs away... -- Lexa, 20:05:42 11/27/01 Tue
... from the Golden egg, giving others room. She smiles inwardly. All these other Candidates were there for the same reason, to hope to Impress the young Queen growing inside the egg. Dusk mentally chides her.

I know, I know, that's why I'm here too, she thinks back to the little brown fire lizard. She gazes wonderingly at the other, mottled eggs on the sands, thinking how many young men and women will Impress the browns, greens, blues, and even bronzes that will break out of their shells, and would she be one of them? Or would she have to wait until the next Hatching to Impress? Could she even Impress at all...?

To not be able to Impress a dragon; it was a scary thought. And all she could do was wait. Dusk urges patience in her from his perch high above the sands.

She sighs. Maybe she should talk to one of the other Candidates? But they all seem deep in their own hopes and aspirations, she doesn't want to bother them, and buries herself in her own thoughts.

She walked in and smiled as this time the burning hot sands didn't make her mince, she had remembered her boots. She quickly crossed over th ground towards the Queen egg, hearing the soft crush of sand as she went. Thaia walked up to the mottled Gold egg and kneeled down, tenerly hugging it close to her. I hope you hold my life partner. It's anyone's dream, really. I think I'd like to reinstate one of the Weyrs someday. I think I can be- she straightened, I know I can be a good Weyrwoman, I just want the chance. She stared at the egg, and almost thought she could hear a croon from inside, but no, it was only her imagination. With a resigned sigh, she gently patted the golden beauty of a thing and walked off the sands to rejoin her friends at the Table. I guess I would be happy with any dragon, but I can't help but want the Queen...

  • Entrance -- Kuman & Arkia, 22:34:29 11/25/01 Sun
Kuman walks about the sands, his stormy eyes drinking in every detail. To Impress a dragon, to live as his parents always told him he couldn't, it was anyone's dream, really. Turning, he finds his sister walking away. Let her go, there were more important things to think of, flying for instance. He had seen the riders go between on several occasions, and could only imagine the breathless lift doing so would give to him. Running his hand through his hair, he lets out an excited sort of chirrup, watching the eggs. To bravely soar between, to know and trust another with your life, to have someone other than himself to assure. To be a rider and know what it felt like to be wanted, to be accepted. Something he could only hope for. On tenterhooks, he shifts around, awaiting any sort of movements. He closes his eyes against the sun, imagining the lift and thrust of a well muscled dragon beneath him, the rush of wind against his face as he and his daring companion flew through the sunset. But that wouldn't be for awhile, he told himself. I have to raise my daring companion first. Soon he is at the mercy of his dreams, spreading his arms wide as he makes his vicarious flight through the clouds of Pern, uncaring as to who watches him.

Arkia watches the Queen on the nest warily, the golden egg seeming to taunt her. Life was like that, a golden egg in view and a dragon between. They all wanted to Impress the golden, the girls. In their hearts she knew they did, even if they did shy away from it. She wouldn't deny it was a wish of hers, why else would she be here? She and her brother had known sixteen turns of misery before she had sense to draw them away. All he could think about was becoming a rider of Pern, to save and protect, to be glorified. All she wanted, she told herself countless times a day, was to be accepted. Shaking her short cropped hair free in the wind, she glances at the Queen Egg challengingly. Smiling down at it, she speaks half to herself and half to the matron dragon.

I suppose every girl here spins by to touch this egg once every few minutes, hmm? They have their hearts set on it, and I don't blame them. Me? I want to know I'm good for something, if any dragon chose me, I'd be the proudest girl on Pern. She turns to the Egg and marvels at all the girls circulating about it. And I'm one of them, here, aren't I? She steps away from the Golden Egg, giving everything room. She directs her thoughts to the egg, her tone tinged with the realized falacy of her actions.
I hope you get Impressed by someone with big plans, someone who knows what's best for the Weyrs. I'm only a youngster, what do I know? She glances at her brother with humor in her eyes, his arms were spread wide and he was pretending to fly again. Maybe someday.... shaking her head, she stands back and watches the proceedings, hoping she is chosen for something, anything.

  • Walks in... -- Lexa, 19:02:53 11/25/01 Sun
Lexa walks in slowly and respectfully, looking around. Her newly Impressed brown fire lizard, Dusk, flies upward to perch somewhere with more altitude, to get a good view of the sands. The sixteen-Turn-old walks up to the sands, gazing on the eggs with awe.

_It would be amazing to Impress a dragon,_ she thinks, remembering how wonderful it was to Impress even the little fire lizard. Then she sees what she'd been looking for -- the Queen egg. She walks over to it, silent and cautious out of enormous respect. She is in complete awe of the beautiful egg, her nearly life-long dream only surfacing in flashes as she stares at the egg.

She'd always dreamed she'd Impressed a Queen, and could reinstitute one of the two still empty Weyrs. It was a silly dream, she always told herself, but now the egg was so close...

Gathering courage, she reaches out and touches the egg gently with her fingertips. It is so warm, so full of life, it seems as if the tiny Queen inside was already willing to break out of the shell and live. It probably wouldn't happen soon, though, she told herself. And even then, the Queen would probably not look to *her*. _Well, one could always hope,_ she thought, and contented herself with gazing throughtfully at the beautiful egg.

  • ~+~+~ -- Koryn and Pheonix, 22:21:57 11/23/01 Fri
+Koryn leaned against the wall of the Hatching Grounds, content to stay in the shadows than be out in the heat. Long periods in the sun had always made her ill-tempered, but there hadn't been much of a problem since most of the trade routes were through forests. Pheonis was lying on his back asleep in the sand, the pink tongue lolling out the side of his mouth as her twitched his leg and rolled onto his side before going back into a deeper sleep. Tying his leash to a sort of outcropping, she walked toward the eggs, trying to keep her mind of the blistering heat that was starting to make her feet hurt from standing so long. She walked around each egg, noting the intricate design of color on each one as she guessed what color might be once it hatched. The Queen Egg was no problem; there was only one with such color, and it was the largest of all the eggs by far. Koryn couldn't help but wonder when it would hatch; would it be the first? The second? The last? The Gold Amenth was watching all of the Candidates warily, eyes whirling hues of red and orange. She was a protective mother, but she had a right. Koryn snapped out of her trance. She'd been staring at the mottled shell of the Queen for what had seemed like hours, but had only truly been a few minutes. She reached out, brushing slender fingers along the shell, a small smile appearing on the femme's face before flitting away. I'm Koryn...I wonder what your name will be... She thought to no one, although she wanted the Queen with such a fervent desire it was almost inbearable, she had willed herself not to aim that high. She was a realist, always wanting to keep her goals safely withing reach. Once those were attained, she'd set new ones, and that was how she would live. It wasn't as if she couldn't dream of soaring high up on the neck of a Gold during Threadfall, riding in the Queen's Wing, using the flamethrower to shoot the Thread right out of the sky, grinning happily as they disappeared back to their Weyr. Again she shook herself out of her enthralled state of mind. Bloody heat's going to make me start hallucinating after a while. She retreated to the sliver of shade that had started to disappear as the sun rose higher in the sky. She grabbed Pheonix's leash and toed him gently with the tip of her sandal. He stood, yawned, and shook the sand out of his fur before giving his full attention to the female. She grinned at the pup+
"So, you want some food boy"
+The dog proceeded to bark a sufficient amount to wake up an entire hold, attempting to jump up into Koryn's arms but falling short, content to walk. She stood up straight, fixing her robes before calling to the others+
"I'm going to the Table if anyone would like to join me you're welcome!"

  • ~ inside ~ -- Janva, 08:36:21 11/22/01 Thu
Janva streatched, looking about. Time for her to go on a bit of a walk. She began to walk around the Hatching Sands, watching each of the eggs. Would one crack open soon? Would it hold her life-mate? Better yet - did she have a life mate? Janva gulped, noticing the new Canidate on the sands, and nodded to her, before continuing her "stroll." So few Canidates - so many eggs. When would they hatch? What would they do - there weren't enough people here to keep the hatchlings Impressing... Ah, well... What could she do about it?

Ending up in front of the Queen Egg once more, she reached a tentative hand out to it, brushing fingertips across it's now - hard shell. Eyes wide, she glanced up at the Queen dragon protecting her eggs. I hope... But she didn't let herself finish that thought as she watched the Golden Egg. She got who she got, that was all...

Description: She was born and still lives in Ruatha. Her deepest desire is to become a Dragonrider, but she realizes it may not be possible, and since she has a fair skill with music, she may apply to become a Harper. She has golden hair which goes down to her waist, and usually wears wherhide vest and pants, odd for a girl. Her eys are cornflower blue, and her skin is fair. She does not have a temper, and your first impression would be that she is gentle and sweet. However, if her friends are in danger, she will fight fiercely.
And what Hold/Hall you will originally be staying in: Ruatha

    Is this ok?

  • ~+~+~ -- Koryn and Pheonix, 15:46:07 10/23/01 Tue
~The femme stepped onto the Sands, jade oculi meandering around the area, shaded by the black locks of unruly short hair. She sighed, it wasn't often the she could tame the black hair, only stretching to her ears. Smoothing it down a little, she surveyed the eggs, emerald hues fially finding the queen egg. She walked further, the scorching heat of the Sands barely felt even though her sandals were thin. Years of being a holdless had hardened her feet so that she could walk through just about anything. She watched, fidgeting incessantly, trying to think of some way to get rid of her excess energy. An amiable smile donned her features and she retreated from the eggs, selecting a spot void of people and dragons. She took a running start and began a series of flips, doubles, ariels, anything she could think to do. Finally, she fell back in the sand, winded but smiling. Every time she did that it always mad her feel better..although sometimes it made her feel sore. She brushed the sand off the ivory white Impression robe, not really caring much that it was a bit dirty, and walked back over to where she had been standing earlier. She glanced at the two girls who had already arrived, still smiling. Giving a silent wave and grinning, she turned towards her ever present memories, turning each over in her mind as they ran with her current thoughts.~

=A blood bay stallion raced across the flat trail, ahead of a train of wagons, two other equines behind it. The black haired femme crouched low to the horse's withers, riding bareback unlike the other two adolescents. They were riding point for the teams. Slowing to a halt, she let the pair catch up, circling the high strung horse. She grinned at her comrades, twins named Atreal and Emily; the three were friends, all at 15 Turns old, doing anything and everything together, though Ralkira seemed to be the leader. The pair stopped and laughed, chattering together as the horses rested, the words meaningless now=

+Ralkira sat on the top of an overturned wagon, watching everyone below her. Those who had survived were few and far between. Atreal had lived, but her twin had not. Atreal and Ralkira sat atop the wagon with a few of the other children, though all of them were to young to understand what had happened. Thread had falln out of order and caught them off guard. the femme balled her hands into fists and chewed on her lip, making the decision that she would help to stop this menace by becoming a dragonrider.+

~The youth shook her head and gazed at the eggs once more, enthralled and amazed at the stunning creatures that would soon hatch from them. Strangely enough, something furry touched the back of her leg, making her freeze in fear for a split second. By the..wait a minute..She looked down at her robes. A ball of white and brown fur sat at her heels, and she grinned and sat down. The wolfish looking hound scrambled into her lap, brown muzzle licking her face.~ "Pheonix!! Cut it out!! I told you to stay in the rooms until I got back!!" ~She sighed and fished around in the pack she had slung over her shoulder. Retrieving the long leather cord, she tied it loosely around the dog's neck before tying it on her wrist. The canine consented to remaining in her lap as the pair waited for the hatching. Ralkira had found the pup by the side of the dirt-packed road she had traveled along on her way here. Still wanting a companion since her horse had died in the Threadfall, she decided to take him in. Succeeding in taming the pup, she called him Pheonix after her stallion. The duo sat, both watching through jade orbs as Amenth watched her eggs, everyone expectant. She sat cross legged in the Sand, a little away from the other Candidates, listlessly playing with the short locks of black hair as Pheonix lie near her, chewing on a piece of dried wherry meat that she had given the mutt earlier, it's frosty green eyes alive with emotion. She watched her dog, his features making him seem like he had the same wicked but mysteriously calm grin the the femme posessed. She snapped her fingers and the wolf hound came closer sitting in her lap as she rubbed behind his ears, petting him softly and muttering under her breath. The pink tongue lolled out of Pheonix's mouth and he gave a yawn, settling himself down to take a nap. She gave an amiable smile, jade orbs soft and warm. She took the dog out of her lap and got out the small blanket she had for him down on the sand, laying him on it. Attaching the leather cord around her wrist, she sat cross legged once more, closing her eyes and going into an alert doze.~

+Ralkira walked down the dirt road, heavy feet thudding along dully. She had been travelling for days and seen nothing but dirt and shrubs. Sand and grit fly swiftly through the air, clinging to anything and everything it finds, but the holdless trudged willingly on. She saw something moving in the dirt by the road, a white and bron furry little form. She ran toward where it lay and picked it up out of the sand gently. It was a pup, large of paw and wolfish, bruised but alive. The femme had cared for it until it was able to walk, and the pair became attached. She named him after her stallion, Pheonix, and the duo made a bond between themselves.+

~The youth snapped out of her doze. She smiled remembering when she had found the half-dead pup. Pheonix watched his owner, as if he could read her mind. the pairs eyes met, and Koryn grinned the unmistakable silly, daring smile, and sat in the Sands, white robes already showing the recent and hard wear they had been given Koryn, weary of the day and the heat, sought the shadows to find relief, under the sloping walls where it was still slightly cool, where the sun had not yet touched.~

  • ~*~ -- Rexana and the Lizards (Aidan and Eetu), 15:35:02 10/23/01 Tue
*Rexana stepped onto the stands, squinting in to the sun. She brushed a few stray threads of coppery hair out of her eyes and scanned the sands. Her eyes fell onto the unhatched eggs they were beautiful. It seemed to her that everytime she came to a hatching the eggs just got prettier and prettier. Of, course this time it could just be the fact that she's a candidate. She grinned at the thought. She thought back to the first hatching she had ever seen. It had been a happy memory for her, almost.*

~*~*~ Flashback ((Cue the sentimental music))~*~*~

A dirty young woman came trudging out of the caverns screaming in fury. "Rexana! Rexana! Where have you been?!?" She marched straight upto an even dirtier little girl.
"I'm sorry mother, It took me longer than I expected" She bowed her head.
"Well? Where are those loaves I asked you for?"
    "I, I dropped them" "
You dropped the entire basket of bread! Why you little wherry-" The woman had raised her hand to strike before the girl could explain and moved to strike her, when a rider held the womans arm in place.
"Why now, you wouldn't be planning to hit this little girl, would you Miss?" She jerked away.
"Leave us be, she's my daughter I can do anything I please with her!"
"If you try to hit that girl you'll be in an awful lot of trouble with Weyrleader."
She stepped back "But, that clumsy thing just dropped an entire basket of fresh bread."
The rider look down at the girl. "Weren't you going to tell her the truth Rex?"
The little girl raised her head at being addressed. "Well, I didn't really drop it, see some of the kids were..."
"They were teasing you again?" The anger immediately left the woman's face and she bent to hold her daughter close.
"Yes. I was walking past with the basket and the started saying those terrible things again and then..." She broke off and started to cry. Her mother had comforted her for a long while before sending her on her way. It was just like her mother to being simpathetic one moment and all business the next. As Rexana was walking back towards the kitche, basket in hand she heard noises from the sands. There had been a clutch then and she hurried to make sure that nothing was going wrong. As Soon as she stepped out she shielded her eyes to find herself staring into a sea of people with their eyes glued to the eggs. SHe remembered crawling under all those people to where she could finally see what was happening. She stared in awe at the hatching eggs and stayed for hours, until last dragon had popped out of its shell.
    ~*~*~End Flash back~*~*~

Of course she had gotten quite a beating for going to watch, but in her opinion it had been well worth it. Because now she was standing here. Hoping to impress one of the great treasures of the sky. *She smoothed her impression robes and grinned at the two firelizards winging at her side trying to fan some of the heat away from her.* Ican always count on you two, can't I? *they chirped in reply and continued their efforts. she plucked out a few strips of meat for both of them and they snatched them up hungrily.* Give them a little to eat once in a while and those to will love you forever *She said softly and chuckled to herself. Thhis was going to be a much happier hatching, she hoped*

  • ~ inside ~ -- Janva, 16:22:45 10/16/01 Tue
Janva began to wander around the Sands, gently touching some eggs as she walked past them, eyes soft as she relaxed in the heat of the Sands. "I wonder if I'll Impress a Dragon." She murmered softly to herself, looking wonderingly up at the Golden Queen that resided above the Queen Egg...

  • ~*~ entrance ~*~ -- Janva, 15:22:10 08/20/01 Mon
A tall girl stepped into the Hatching Sands slowly, her blue-violet eyes taking everything in as she looked around once. All the Eggs, the Queen Dragon, the WeyrWoman... She nodded to the Dragon, and entered the Sands further, mincing from foot to foot as the heat of the Sands wouldn't let one keep a foot down for long. She reached up with one hand to brush her chin length brown hair back behind her ears, and then commenced to go up to the largest egg among those there: the Queen Egg. She bit one lip. Oh, aye, it would be marvelous to Impress the Queen... but she was just a poor holder's girl from Southern. Shouldn't she just be glad to be here, at Eastern Weyr, in the north? ((it is, isn't it?)) She felt blood on her tongue, and released her lip, realizing that she had bit hard enough to make it bleed. She licked her lips once, and then gulped hard. What if she didn't Impress? She had had her heart set on it ever since she had been Searched... she hadn't ever thought about what would happen if she didn't Impress! She shook her head quickly. She mustn't consider that - she would cross that when she came to it. She turned back to the Golden Egg, and stared at it, and slowly remembered...

.::. Her parents were there suddenly, and she was back at Southern Hold. Her parents each kissed her, and then said goodbye. She, only being eight then, hadn't wanted them to go, and was screaming for them to stay here with her, and disgusted, her eldest brother had held her back, holding onto her waving fists, stopping her from running after her parents as they rode away a-runner back. Her mother, whom she had loved dearly, turned back once, waved, and then both parents were out of her line of sight. Her brother released Janva, and she fell to the ground sobbing. He rolled his eyes and left, going back to the hold, for while their parents were gone he was in charge. Her youngest brother ran up to Janva once he was gone, and looked at her with sad eyes. He wasn't much older then Janva herself, he just had more self control then her. Catching sight of their eldest sister, he scampered back to the Hold himself. Janva's sister hauled her to her feet and then slapped her - not once, but three times. Janva looked up at her sister mournfully, but at least it had worked: she had stopped crying. Her sister scornfully turned, and then she, too, went back to the hold. .::.

Janva blinked, coming back to the present. Aye, she remembered that evening. That was what had drawn her away from her many siblings, and from the hold...

.::. A fire lizard screeched, and, pumping his wings, flew into the hold, still screeching. It finally was pursuaded to land on the table, and Janva's brother managed to untie the message strapped to it, and the flit vanished between. Janva watched her brother's face anxiously, and suddenly he told them the news. "Father and Mother;s runners both spooked, and threw our parents - they died on their way to the Main Hold. I am to hold here in their place." He said it so mater-of-factly, and Janva burst into tears and ran from the rest of them. She burst outside into the air, and spotted DragonRiders flying there, in the air above her, and she reached an arm up to wave to them. She may have been mistaken, but she always has thought that one waved back. Her tears cleared, and she finally went back to the hold, where her brother was waiting... .::.

Janva came back to herself once more, and sighed deeply. But that was all over with. Her brother could no longer force her into a marriage that she did not wish for, and he couldn't harm her anymore. Thinking of her youngest brother made her smile tentavily - he had been Searched a while back, but he had been by Istan riders. He had Impressed a Green, and he, too, had escaped their eldest brother's harm. The rest of their siblings simply didn't care.

Janva blinked again, and drew herself up. She straightened her shoulders and held up her head. She was a canidate at Eastern Weyr, and she would try her very best to Impress a Dragon, and even if she didn't, she'd stay on here at the Weyr! She stared forecfully at the eggs on the sand, a few at a time, willing one of them to hatch and to come over to her, and for their minds to link, and for her to know that she could never be harmed, and, more importantly, she was loved.

  • Clutching.... -- Dilly and gold Amenth, 17:23:12 08/17/01 Fri
*The supple form of the small queen looks at a glistening clutch of 28 eggs proudly. Settled between her forearms is a gold-gleaming egg. Dilly suddenly hears the voice of her lifemate. Dilly. Twenty-nine. A queen egg. I did well. The short Weyrwoman shoots upright from where she lay, sprawled, on the Sands. "Twenny-NINE!?" she exclaims, her accent getting the better of her. "Amenth! That's wonderful!" Brushing fringes of red hair out of her eyes, Dilly regards the eggs, green eyes shining brightly. The queen croons to her unhatched offspring. They will develope quickly. You need to Search for Candidates. "That's the problem, Amenth-dear... there aren't many people in Hall and Hold to Search! I'll talk to Ginny about it though." The dragon dips her wedge-shaped head in a very human nod. Good. Dilly chuckles and brushes sand off her simple tunic, before sitting right back down where she is.*
