I have a polyester-nylon (not sure which) child's tent and the kids want it camoflage colored. It's white right now. Actually, they might be happy with green or brown if doing a camo pattern is too hard. Any ideas? I don't want it to crack when I fold it up.
Thank you!

Her email address is mpkpatterns@aol.com. I ordered her full set and DVD through paypay on 5/19/14. After my payment went through, another tab popped up of a digital dropbox where I was able to download the files. I did have a minor issue getting my DVD (which is snail mailed) at first. She was responsive and helpful in correcting the issue.

I had the same issue when I first started, but I don't even us the patterns anymore for the skirt. If you do use that pattern until you get you dvd. First you will need to cut about 2 or 3 at the longest layer, the same for the second but minus 1 inch and keep repeating that for each layer that you have but minus 1 inch from the last layer. Hope that helps some. I know that you will not recieve an email you are wasting you time with that.

Just wanted to say, that I have ordered patterns from MPK twice now and have not had a problem. The first time, was through ebay and got the link to the pattern immediately. Second time was through her site, but did not recieve the link to the patterns from Paypal. I did email a couple of times, before I got a response, but she was extremely helpful and made sure I got everything I paid for.

I ordered the patterns and DVD instructions as well. It took 4 weeks to get my DVD and about 2 weeks to get the email instructions emailed to me. I did however get them, just had to wait longer than I wanted. Her feedback is really bad right now due to her response time to emails and to mailing out the DVD's. Hope you get yours faster than I did. :-)

Hi. I finally gave up and filed a paypal claim; then about three days later she refunded my money for the DVD, claiming she had computer problems and had to borrow a computer to get back to everyone. Then the next day she replied to one of my emails that she would check on my order for me, so I replied that she had already refunded my money but that I still wanted the DVD as long as she could mail it out immediately. I recieved the DVD about two days later. Im glad I got it the patterns and instructions she gives are way to confusing I was totally lost and I have been sewing since I was nine years old. When I watched the DVD I was like okay thats easy. I couldnt believe how easy it was compared to the pattern instructions. Thank you all for your replies.

I recently purchased a pattern from my pageant kid.
I am confused on making the cupcake skirt.
I have 3 layers of chiffon. Are they all the same length?
Next is the lining the netting and under lining. Do I use the same pattern that I used for the chiffon? ALso do I make each one an inch shorter as I layer them?
HELP
thanks sue

Hello all! I have decided to step away from sewing and designing for awhile. I am selling my fabrics, rhinestones, ribbons, trims etc. I have lycra from swimsuit weight up to the heavy football pants kind. I have a small amount of sparkle organza, enough for at least 2 full skirts in the 4 and under sizes. I also have a never worn Royal blue and white southern style dress that I would call semi glitz. It would fit about a 8-10 size. Its a 26" waist and chest. If you have any questions email me at Stephisworld@yahoo.com and I can send you pictures of what I have. Thanks!

I have made cupcake skirts before, this time, it isnt flaring up, but actually looking, kind of round at the top and falling down like a southern skirt but full at the top. What did I do wrong? THe fishline is very curly, but not "flaring up" its falling downward in a full round shape.

Yes mma'am, I am wanting to make my daughter a mega glitz cupcake dress that is adjustable from a 18mo-2t as she is 26lbs 33in tall at 17mo old. We've rented dbh dresses and I've found many of inspirational ideas, however here is my problem, How do I make the bodice and cupcake? I have ideas but not for sure. And I was wondering if maybe you have a template you would sell?

It is the gathering at the hem that makes the curls. The fishline acts as support for the curls but it is the gathering that actually makes them. I used three times the diameter I needed and had great curls. After finishing the skirt and allowing it to hang and fluff up a bit, spraying it with extreme hold types of hair spritz will add alot of body and support for the curls to help hold them where you want them as well. Hope this helps!

I love the look of the cupcake pagaeant skirt I see on TV pageant shows and would like to make a skirt for my ballroom dancing. I would need to be able to take long steps/long strides (so it cannot be a straight lining with ruffles/flounces attached.

Measurements are 28-30 in waist/37-39 inch hips and need length of the skirt to be at its shortest 30 inches but preferred to be 33 to 35 inches long.

Would even the largest size child/teen possibly work if I found a pattern?

I make ballroom dance gore, full skirt, godet, ruffle, flounce, irregular hem skirts for myself....

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

And I hope that your little darlings move from pageant to ballroom as they can dance ballroom their entire life!

I have had issues in the past as well. I ordered a dress to her spec sheet and my dress came in 2 toned and didnt fit. I asked it be remade and she agreed. But she took forever to remake (never recieved) and when I asked she said she had paying customer that came 1st. I thought thats what I was. My panty cover for my DD dress was 2 tye dyed along with my bodice not matching my skirt. It was horrible. She did issue me 1/2 refund. But never once did I recieve a tracking number and I believe that if I hadnt hounded her I never would have got the dress period. She has now blocked me from facebook because I would catch her bad mouthing me on some of the boards. Why I dont know, I didnt do anything wrong. Just be careful when ordering and have everything in writting. I did and I think thats the only thing that saved me!

I would think since it is electronic it wouldnt take long but she may not check her email very often if she doesn't sell many so I would give it a couple days and if she doesnt answer emails I would contact paypal. I purchased from her years ago and right after I got mine she quit selling custom patterns and only sold the dvds

I tried emailing just to see how soon it would ship and I haven't received a response yet either. Hope I'm not out my $100. I've been high and low looking for this type of pageant dress pattern. Let me know what you find out. So far the reviews on her don't look so promising. But I'd love to give her a chance for me.

Is there a step by step guide for making a cupcake skirt? As in Cupcake skirts for Dummies or Cupcakes 101? I do know how to sew. Mainly boutique, smocked, natural silk smocked pageant things. I would like to venture into putting my daughter into glitz but have no idea how to make the skirts. I did read earlier post but still need a step by step from the beginning. I am aware of MPK but from what I understand the directions for this are not "spelled out". Can anyone offer help? Would someone email me? Thank you

Does anyone know how to make the swirls that I have seen on dresses? They dont look like the wire swirls that are more tube looking. These are more flat but are covered with fabric.

A lot of people cover craft foam with super stretch. You can alo use two layers of very stiff interfacting. Its basically just making loops and stiching them down.

I use the flexible plastic canvas used for needlework type projects. I cut the canvas to the size I need. I make a superstretch tube that the canvas slides tighty into. I then bend into a bow, bringing the two unfinished ends together into the middle (which will be the wrong side of the bow). Then I sew them together.

Hi, my daughter is 7 and has special needs. She attended a national pageant and has wants to return this year. With her added medical costs this year, we cannot afford to purchase a new dress and I am hoping somebody can help me learn to make one or can make me a shell that I can add to. I am looking for a VERY low to no glitz southern style skirt dress preferably with some form of sleeves. I need the dress by July and I would like to set up payments if it possible. If you can help, I would really appreciate it, even if you have tips and advice, at this point anything helps! Thank you!!!

You will need to order superstretch (spandex house.com is a good place to start)

Look for a dress pattern from a fabric store that will give you a good bodice shape. Most people will make two and sew them together inside out then turn right side and stitch ocer all the seams, sew in boning along the sides and back and there is your shell. Skirts are very tricky and unless you have a serger and are very good with sewing you may want to purchase the skirt seperately. a good skirt will run you about 200.00, but there may be someone on this board that can make one for less. If you want a dress other than white you will need to purchase your materials at the same time to be sure skirt and bodice material matches or dye them. This is a whole other process. email me if you need directions.

It will cost you anywhere between 200-500 for the materials to make a low glitz dress, depending on if you make your oown skirt and the cost of the fabrics if you choose overlayers and expensive laces to embellish your design.

Trims can be found at craft and fabric stores, just be careful not to add too much stuff. If you have any specific questions I will be glad to help you to make your own dress.

go to spandex house or spandex world on line and you will find tons of great fabrics and the lining. There are several types of lining but powernet will give the best structure for a swim wear. Bra cups can be found a fabric stores or craft stores that sell sewing supplies for under 10 bucks.

If you look closely under many cutouts you will still see the boning it is just covered with matching material. Other times they may put boning on either side of the cutout, just depends on what looks best. If you leave the boing out completely the bodice will bunch up and not fit as well.

I have searched in the archives and cannot find any help, so I am posting this question. I understand everything except how to figure out to cut the top two layers. After I fold my material to get even circle, how do I know where to begin cutting. I am having trouble with the waist area. It is a very small opening that will not fit over her waist. I'm sure I haven't truly explained my problem, but is there a tutorial somewhere that will walk me thru this? I have purchased a video off ebay and patterns from well know seamstress, yet neither truly explains how to adjust my cutting based on the size skirt I want. Any help is so very much appreciated.

When I fold my material, I start at the bottom and measure up from there. For example if I need a 6 inch layer, I measure 6 inches and then the waist/top opening would be around 12-15 inches...then that times 8 is plenty inches that I gather down to the waist size of 18-25 inches.

Does that help?

I fold it so that the material is 8 layers thick per top layer. I do not piece anything together as I dont like the seams in the top layers. My skirts are 2 layers of ruffles and 2-5 layers for the top depending on how long it is. (babies less...10 year olds the most). You can email me and I can go over it with you. I will be out of town for the next 2 days but I am able to walk you through it over the phone too.

Hello ladies, Just a reminder that I can help with pageant needs. I make hard shell bows of various desings. I have the most popular set sold on ebay in a variety of colors. I can also make your shells if needed. I take shell orders on a limited basis so not to overload or overpromise my customers. You can check me out on ebay in my store Pageant Mom Designs ebay ID stephsdesigns. I have 100% positive feedback. If ebay fees are too much for you, I can also provide your orders with paypal invoice. Either way all is safe and secure transactions.

superstretch can be purchased from maryjoes online, spandex world or spandex house listed under jumbo lycra. Bodices are made from bustier patterns or an altered dress pattern from any fabric store. My pageant kid patterns work well if you know how to sew princess seams. It takes some practice but bodices can be made out of lots of fabrics, not just superstretch. Use your imagination. As far as the skirts, they are tricky to get just right but southern skirts = all layers about the same length, cupcake layers are stacked with the longer ones on the bottom and the shorter ones on top.

Hope this helps some of you......

It fit like a glove and looked super. The superstretch is nice if you are making the dress with resale in mind, as it's more adaptable to many different body types. Nothing was prettier than the bridal satin bodice though. It was gorgeous.

I construct the skirt with the fishingline ruffle. Then I hang it. After 24 hours I trim the organza so that it is even with the under ruffle. after that I do the fishing line hem. You should not have to trim the waistline.

Use E-6000 for stones or gem tac depends on which you prefer. E-6000 is industrial glue and has a strong odor and fumes but stones stick very well and sets pretty quick. Gem tac looks like elmers glue, no odor, takes longer to set and stones can come off when the garment is washed, but just don't soak the dress for a long time and you should be fine.

Colors and designs depend on your child. Mainly stay away from any color that looks like it belongs on curtains or a couch! Pastels and bright colors, white or anything pretty is good. Muted colors like mauve, taupe, brown stay away from. Black and red don't work on everyone so use it at your own risk. I have seen some amazing dresses in those colors, but it just depends on your child's coloring and personality.
good luck

The best place I have found is MaryJoes in North Carolina. Many of the designers use them. The website is hard to manuver but the phone number is there and if you ask for the mail order department they will help you match things up. They have most of the popular colors in organza and if you ask they will match up linings for you. Organza runs $2.95 a yard. Good quality too. They also have super stretch. They don't take pay pal. I went there one time and OMG you should see the beautiful laces and things they have. Most are not even on their website. I was mad because I couldn't afford to buy much. They have several floors. It's a designers dream store.
Now I'm giving out secrets that aren't suppost to be told. lol, but I don't care,no telling what I'm going to tell next.

Linda look at you giving away secrets. lol. Maryjos is AWESOME. They have AMAZING customer service. Another place we have found is Thompson in Oklahoma City, OK. They are super sweet. They do take paypal from what I remember...I think I used paypal even when I went to the store in person. There is also Golden D'or on Harry Hines BLVD in Dallas, TX. They are super sweet and if you need superstretch in any color they have. Literarlly they have an easy 45 colors. If you get on their mailing list you get emails for 40% off material on certain days. The superstretch ranges from $10.99-18.99 depending on the color. If you need organza to match the superstretch there is also Best Fabrics on Harry Hines. Both of these stores have their own fabric fabrication stores so they can keep their costs down. Between the two there are about 20 stores that sell already dyed lace to match LOL. Crazy but true. We live an hour away and when we go to Dallas my husband says he needs to take survival food. I can literally stay in a 3 block radius for 8 hours and not get bored at all. Good luck.

I have tried to find china blue superstretch to match the china blue organza with no luck. You really can't dye those dark colors. I can make it out of any fabric, but this mom insists on superstretch. If you know where to get it please let me know.

I go to the Dallas fabric stores about every 2 weeks. How soon do you need this? I can look and if they have it I can get it for you and send it to you. Golden D'or is the best for superstretch but their color blue may not be the exact one. Does that make sense?

Cindy I currently have 4 or 5 of the HUGE storage boxes full of spandex. lol I have 2 full of SuperStretch and about 50 different colors of organza on different rolls. He laughs because we normally take my small VW Beetle to the fabric stores and the rolls are almost longer than the car LOL. If you ever need anything just let me know. I try to post on my facebook wall when we are going to the store...Probably we are going next Tuesday or Thursday...After payday so he doesnt complain LOL

pick your fabric that you want monogrammed (I say cotton, it's more stable than satin.)(or you can reverse it) then pic your satin. the satin will be the back and sides of the banner. the cotton will be the front. say you cut your face fabric (cotton) 4 inches in width, you would want to cut your backing (satin) at least 7 to 8 inches wide. then you will pin your fabrics (face side in) all the length of your banner. run a stitch at about 5/8 of an inch, the lenght of both sides. turn right side out. work your fabric so that the back side forms about an inch border on both sides. iron it down. and then tuck your ends under and run a stitch very close to the edge. HTH!

I think you mean interfacing? They come in various weights, iron on or sew-on, you go by the weight of the fabric. Pellon (I hope I spelled this right) is the most know/used brand out there. Since it is a banner I would recommend a light weight interfacing. :)

Okay. I get what you're saying that "designers" have to deal with all the selling and stuff like that, but everybody has to deal with that. It's not only them. Plenty of people out there sew clothes for pageantry all by themselves w/ out help.

They weren't forced into the business so when they entered the business they KNEW it was going to be hard work. How is telling somebody to post a banner on a pageant board hard work? How is getting the word out there, that your stuff is for sale hard work? They're big name designers, they don't need the help as soon as they have stuff for sale people come running to buy. They don't post the ads anyway, others do.How is choosing what color for a dress you want hard work? How is putting stones on a dress hard work? My 10 yr old does that all the time. I'll give you one thing dealing with moms is hard, but ,as I said earlier, nobody forced you into this. It's not rocket science. Help isn't bad, but claiming other people's work as your own is wrong and also misleading to your customers as well. "There is no way that you have time to do both and be a big named designer" Oh really? Teresa Mallouky and the lady from Cinderella fashions must be magical. As far as I'm concerned they are the only people I know that make their own clothes AND they are big name designers.Seriously, if you want to be a designers that's fine, but at least make your own clothes.

Teresa Mallouky does not sew everything that she sells. She uses seamstresses too. She sews some things but not alot. Teresa is not the only employee of Lil Louky's Designs. Cinderella Fashions is not one employee, Rena does sew most of her garments but does have help from others that rhinestone and sew her skirts for her. Like I said, you can't do it all by yourself and be a big named designer. There are no big named designers that do not have help from someone. You have to look like this way, the name is the business and the business as a whole gets the credit not an individual person.
You can be a low key designer that builds a decent clientel and does it all. Even low key designers are sometimes overwhelmed with work and ask others for help.
Not having to deal with paypal and moms is trade enough for me to not get credit for work.

Like I said earlier, you still need to make your own stuff. I don't care if you are the big thing out there, you still have to. I mean seriously if you can't even handle the work load, then don't get into the business or don't take as much work. I'm sure there are designers that are big and make their own work. The dishonestly of these people are disgusting,it's overwhelming. My grandmother made pageant attire. On average she would get 30 orders per month. She did it all herself the sewing, stoning, etc. I'm pretty sure if a 78 yr old can do this so can these thirty something yr olds.

Okay, so I purchased a pattern a while back from MPK and it doesnt have instructions on what to do with it. ANyways, I attempted to make a cupcake skirt. used fishing line, etc and got the rolled hem look, but not as curly as I wanted it to be. And then the skirt didnt look like a cupcake skirt. It just looked like a skirt. So I dont know what I am doing or not doing. And also, when sewing with organza, when i do the rolled hem with fishing line, you can just pull it apart. And i did an underskirt for just a regular cotton skirt, rectangle instead of circle and the seams sewn together, just rip apart. even using my serger. what am i not doing or doing wrong? Help.

It may be because I have aol. I changed my email on here because I don't check the other one very often. I looked at your facebook and all your suits are adorable. One is just as cute as the next. The work on them looks so professional. I just can believe you accept such a cheap price for them. Get someone to make a banner for you and post them on the main voy boards. I don't want to tell you how to price them, but you need to at least double that price. The pm's are visual. Most can't imagine what they want. They want to see it. If you can make them drool over a well designed suit they will buy it. Put your price right on the banner. That way they won't bother you if they can't pay that price. Banners are only about $15 and you can post it yourself. It only take about 10 minutes to post it on about 10 of the main boards. Just trying to help.

Okay ladies is this truly fair? I make pageant dresses thanks to everybody on this board. i started a few years ago and I got the hang of it! Now, here is what has me confused. All these pageant moms are willing to pay big $$$ for these big name designers one even paid 4,500(You still breathing?) for a dress designed by Michael Booth and made by Tina Marshall and with all respect I have seen and even made better myself & so have "Regular designers" I'm not trying to bash or start a riot, but what is the big deal about these big name designers? A good majority of them have bad customer service, ship late, etc. But they still get all the fuss and orders. I bet most of them don't even sew! Meanwhile use "no names" are busting our butts to make a good quality dress.Yeah their work is nice and all but I have seen much better by people that aren't as popular. The thing that gets me the most is that these parents are willing to shell out thousands for ONE dress, but if a "no name" designer asks for that amount even if their work is nice, they get a second look. I think the no name vendors do a beautiful job. I find it sad that many are trying to push out the average pageant mom who cant afford the $4500.00 dress.

And I have been doing it for about 10 years now. I'm really surprised at what I see some Moms' pay for swimwears by big name designers. It blows my mind! I can make the same swimwears as they can. But since I'm not Sandy Henry (whomever she really is, I mean the seamstress not the name!)I can't even hardly get $75.00 for custom swim. I've got a few long time customers who are quite satisfied with my work who keep me busy, but it could also be that my prices are very, very reasonable. I also get my orders out on TIME!! EVERY TIME!!I'm not doing this to make a living. I do it because its my hobby and my love! But I completely understand where you are coming from. Me and you should be up to our necks in orders! But we aint! Why is that???? Cause we don't have that name recognition that they do! It sucks, but is the real, strange world of pageants!!

I have seen your work! You're amazing! If I were you 75 would be the deposit! LOL. One mom wanted me to make her a CUSTOM national glitz SW from her own original design and was so shocked when I charged her 300. What the heck! Some Sandy Henry suits resell at 300.I'm doing you a favor!

I have seen your work and you do some cute suits. Many years ago I called CP Annie who make the big girls suits. I ask them if they had anyone that would make childrens suits. The gave me a number of a lady named Myrna. I was over booked so I asked her to make some suits for me. Well, she only charged $30 per suit and you could get any style that CP Annie had. I ordered them but didn't like the way the butt came up over the cheeks. Your gonna love this one! I gave her name to Tina Marshall and she ordered some, she wasn't into the swimwear that much at the time so she was friends with Sandy Henry and Sandy needed to make some money so Tina gave her Myrnas number and Sandy has been using her every since. Sandy really started making some big money so now Tina has trouble getting very many orders from Myrna. I think Myrna's prices have went up since then, but not that much. I will tell you this, you are selling yourself short. Your suits are way too cute to sell them for that price. See, I'm on this board telling secrets they will not appreciate, but I'm really tired of seeing people like you that does quality work getting nothing for their work while some that don't work for it rake in the money. They will all probably hate me because I know too much on them and have known most of the big time pageant people including big pageant directors for more than 20 years. I don't make near what I used to, but it will build back up if I put beautiful things out there

Just to let everyone know that neither Michael Booth, Tina Marshall or Carolyn Kieser sew a stich. They have people sew for them at a very cheap price and they throw stones on them and sell them for the big bucks. I know because I sewed for Michael and Tinas children before they became big name designers. I sewed for Carolyn Kieser untill 2 years ago. I sewed for Tina Marshall untill a year ago. I have made plenty of money for them. I taught her daughter how to rhinestone. Do you think I can get a decent price for what I do? No, It depends how who you know in this business. I have been doing this 27 years. I've never told any of this. A few people know this but most dont. This is a very hard business. I'm telling you now because I don't care anymore what anyone has to say. I see many things running on their banners with the clothes I made.
I had a very good business at one time and sewed for many of the big names on my own. Then had a heart attack and quit for a while. When I came back no one knew me all new kids. I started sewing for them and now regret ever doing it. My own fault, but oh well life goes on.

Woah. I had a feeling they maybe didn't do some things themselves, but I never knew they did that. It's really a shame. Sometimes I feel like quitting, but I always convince myself not to. I hope the pageant world realizes what these people do. Slapping rhinestones and appliques on it does not make it yours. And to think all this time I would just look at their dresses, and ask myself how they do certain things, but finding this out is really kind of surprising. Just curious where did you learn to sew? Thanks.

Gloria--I starting sewing when I was 14. I am now 65 lol. My daughter started pageants when she was 9 and I just made her first dress and people loved it. and offered to pay me. She's now 38. The only other person making dresses back then was Judy Burton. That was Nikki Burtons mom. She made some pretty dresses with appliques and pearls on them, Then I started sewing for Hanna Douglas when she was 3 and many others. I started putting the fishing line in the bottom and stoning them. I'm self taught. I have had a lot of fun doing this. I feel like God blessed me with the talent to do it. He gives me inspired ideas. This is not an easy job. Once I get the idea I'm on the hunt for fabrics and things to decorate with. Thats a job in itself. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that.lol Trust me, there is nothing made out there now that hasn't already been done many times. They think they have an original design but havent been around long enough to know that it is not original. I have video tapes to prove it from back in the late 80's. I have to laugh at them.

I have sewn for several designers as well and started basically the same way. I have my own clients now (mostly) and I only sew for people that are referred to me because I prefer to charge a fair price because my pay is when they win big in something I made. I do not do this for a living so it stays fun for me and not a job but I do make good money just not a fortune at the expense of others. I encourage people to follow their dreams and go for it. This is a hard and unforgiving business but you will only get better and better. There should be a tv show following the true origination and progression of some of these garments. It would be very interesting to see who has the real talent and creativity out there!!!!

I feel your frustration. I have been making dresses for a couple of years and thought I could make a career out it. What a joke! Like most I started making my daughters clothes and noticed what others paid for "big names". I charge very reasonable prices and even tried half price custom dress sales. I've basically given up. I'm just going to do stuff for my girls and sit back and laugh at what others have to pay. I enjoy designing and creating them so it will continue to be a sometimes lucrative hobby:)

Have you ladies, the ones that sew for the designers, ever considered taking legal action? It's ridiculous that dresses cost up t0 8K and you make nothing near that amount. I can't stress it enough how wrong this is. What bugs me the most is that they have the audacity to call it theirs, and give no credit to the seamstress.

I just thought it was my own stupidity of sewing for them in the first place. Everyone of us who sew for them are actually ruining it for the real designer out there to make decent money on their things. Without someome sewing for them, they wouldn't have a business. The problem is that someone will always sew for them to make the money. They also have coaches pushing their work because the coaches get free clothes from them and I know this for sure because I sewed many things for a coach that pushes one of them. This so call designer also has a big time pageant director who pushes her things. You can't really fight the way they protect each other.

8K dresses are rare. I personally do not know anyone that has charged 8k for a dress. The most I've ever seen is 5k and that was the mom that requested that price level because she wanted to be over the top at nationals. Reality is that even the big named designers are not making big money. The average dress order is around 1500-1800. By the time you pay a seamstress 600-800 for a shell then pay for fabrics and trims at 100-150 then rhinestones at 500-700. Designer makes 300-400 on average. Don't argue that fabrics are not that high because they are on national clothes. I know there are some cheap things used but it is because they work for whatever they are used for but majority of the materials are not cheap. They put the time in going to buy fabrics, doing the fittings, taking the measurements, and dealing with the people if the order isn't done on time or doesn't fit exactly right. The way I see it the seamstress wins because they don't have to look for work the designer brings it to them and they make as much as the designer that is taking the credit and responsibility for the garmet. If you are going to sew for a designer what you have to know is that it is like working for any other business, you have to do top work and have it done on time everytime or you will be replaced no matter how much of yourself you have put into it. And you never teach anything to anyone if you are going to take it personally when they become your business competitor. Like Burger King showing McDonalds how to make a hamburger. It takes years to establish yourself as a top designer. Years of traveling, being away from your family. Anyone can do that if they want to put the time and work in but alot of people aren't willing to do that. People want to make things in the comfort of their home, slap it on ebay and make good money. Well it doesn't work that way, sorry. Just like it took Calvin Klein years to become a big designer, do you really think that he personally sews everything that has his name on it? Get real people.

I remember chatting w/ a pageant dad at a pageant once. So the cost of dresses came up. He told me the most he has paid for a dress was 8k.Not sure if Michael booth was the "designer" or Glenna Hampton. But I've seen Glenna's and they are gorgeous.Still too much though.

I understand where you're coming from. It's true that most people in the fashion industry don't sew what they design, but these are pageants we're talking about. It's not like millions of people are demanding dresses at the same time and you need a whole bunch of seamstresses to sew you your things. Not a whole lot a people order these dresses, well not at the same time, you're not in a time crunch either since they give months to make dresses. If you're a pageant designer and advertise these dresses as you're own, the least you can do is make them.

Not trying to disturb anyone, but when I sewed for the designer I designed everything then made it and decorated it. The only thing left was the stones, which they did. They can say designer all they want, but if they don't know the basic construction of the garment how can they call themselves a designer. I promice every big name designer in the market knows basic sewing. That's a fact.Just watch project runway once and you will know.

Yes, I made many of them for her. 10 years ago the stage was full of chiffon dresses. The first dress I ever made was chiffon for my daughter. I used to air brush them with different colors also. What a pain! lol, but they were very different. Organza dresses were out there, but not as much as chiffon. It's more difficult to work with but so soft looking on stage.

Yes you sewed the garments and designed them except rhinestoning. Did you have to work your tail off selling garments? Or did the orders come to you? Did you have to face the moms when garments were not finished on time or weren't fitting correctly? Did you have to travel all the time? Did you have to pay for advertising? Did you have to figure out colors or buy most of the fabrics? Did you have to deal with getting people to pay for the garments that they ordered? I understand that the big named designers do not actually make their garments but there has to be a person booking and selling garments and someone making garments. There is no way that you have time to do both and be a big named designer. You have to have help in some way from other employees. Whether they make just parts of a garment or the whole thing. The seamstresses may not get the credit but there is a whole lot that they don't have to deal that comes with that credit. If you have ever had to deal with pageant moms, you know what I am talking about. I see my garments on banners everyday. I see my garments on girls walking around in the ballrooms at pageants running up to the big named designer thanking them. I don't get credit for anything that I make and I am fine with that.

I will have to tell you that your right about dealing with "some" of the moms. I have been on both sides of this coin.Things have changed so drastically in the pageant world. I have been trying to build my business back up for the past year. I don't advertise on ebay because moms who look there are looking for a deal and I mean dirt cheap. I don't like doing pay pal, but have been forced into it because pm's are used to the convience of it. I just had a lady named Carrie Brown file a claim and pay pal jerked $475 out of my account because she said she didn't get the dress. I have a reciept from UPS and a picture of her in the dress at IFF and FF nationals. It takes 30 days to resolve it, but just makes me angry they can just take that money from me at a whim. So yes there are a lot of things to deal with when you do it yourself, but myself personally will never sew for another so called designer again. I don't have a problem with others doing it. I'm going to fight this out on my own or quit all together.
This is so funny. I didn't know anything about facebook, but my 13 year old grandaughter opened one for me and put 4 or 5 pictures on there and next thing I got some orders. I was shocked. I get plenty of messages about things, but maybe one order out of every 10. Once in a while I run a banner and post to the voy boards. It takes some time and I have found if you get a good customer, they order several times a year. Once you get enough of them built up you have a pretty good business.
Another thing is I just want enough to keep me busy, but not too busy. When my name was big out there I just about worked myself to death from the time I got up untill I went to bed. I'm not intrested in that anymore. There is plenty of work out there for all of us. 4 or 5 outfits a month is enough for me.

I don't think it is true. She stopped communicating with me, but still sent the dress shell two weeks later. Not sure what the problem is/was. That was about two months ago thru Ebay. Dress was very nicely made.

I'm not sure about Janet Leigh But she has made our shells for years. She made our last one around may. She told me she had been very sick. I really hope nothing has happen to her. I went on ebay earlier tonight and her account has been canceled and her listings on other sites have expired. If anyone finds out anything about her, I would love to know too, she is such a wonderful person. I'm also upset because I have no clue where we'll get our shells from now ( she custom made my childs since she was 2).

I need help in knowing how many inches to cut out my circles for a skirt. How many inches to cut out a 12-18 mo and a 3-4 yr skirt? How do I figure out how many yards it will take to make these sizes? Will need top layers and liner layer and how many yards to cut out for ruffles. Don't want to buy any more material than I will need. Thanks so much for your help.

For a skirt in the 12-18 month size I use about 6 yrds 7-8" length and for the 3-4 yr old I use at least 8yrds and 9-10" lengths. I use 3 layers of organza and 1-2 layers of ruffles depending on how full you want it. I sew my ruffles to the lining that I use underneath. One tip allow yourself and extra 1" for sewing to waistband and hemming. So for example if you need a 10" skirt cut the length of the circle 11".

Thanks for your reply. I know how to fold the material to cut out the circles, what I don't know is how to measure to cut out the waist. How many inches do I go down from my tip of material?...does that make sense???

I know its a gamblers hat- but what kind of material should the hat be made out of? Obviously not straw ;). Also where do I need to make the cuts so bobby pins can be inserted. There are lots of tricks and I don't want that hat moving! I understand the h/m person would do this but I don't want to be worrying over a hat on pageant day.

Feel free to drop me a line if needed, I check my email a few times a day.

Thanks! =)

This has been the biggest hindrance in me sewing my daughter's pageant dresses and I have finally figured it out. Is is alot easier and neater to do the fishing line with the serger. Let me first say I do not have a fancy serger it is a simple bottom-line Singer. What I do is adjust the settings to a rolled foot setting which is only one needle (it is in the manual and real simple). I also disengage the blade, which is a simple push in and flip up for mine. I put my fabric under the presser foot and hand turn the the needle down into the fabric. I then slide my fishing line to the right-side of the needle and lower the presser foot and go to sewing. I keep the fishing line and the edge of the fabric pulled to the right because it (fishing line) will try to slide to the opposite side of the needle and cause the fishing line to jump out of the rolled edge. But the serger basically encases the fishing line and fabric edge nice and neat. I LOVE it. I can now make my daughters dresses. I hope this helps people get over the fear of the serger and the fishing line. Have Fun

I have a brand new ( box never opened) Singer Precision sewing machine, model # 7444. A couple of great things about this machine are that it has a one touch button holer and 50 decorative stitches. I purchased it as a christmas gift for my niece but didn't end up giving it to her because someone beat me to it! lol!Now it just sits in the closet and I need the space.
First $100 takes it! I will also include Shipping.
my email is fashionsensepageantwear4u@yahoo.com , I can send pics of the box with the details on the machine if you are interested.

Hi I am very new to the whole pageant thing. I am wanting to make a dress for my 4yr old daughter. I have gotten a lot of information online and am about to purchase a pattern from mypageantkids. I was wondering if it is an easy pattern to follow? I am an have a lot of sewing experience and do a lot of sewing for the public. And do stores like hancock and hobby lobby carry the super stretch? I am wanting to make a 2 color dress/skirt also, preferably blue and purple. Is it best to find the fabrics in these colors or dye them, which i have never done? I have soooo many questions!!! Yikes

When making the cupcake skirt, what are these ruffle layers people talk about? I understand cutting out the circle skirts gathering them at the waistline and sewing them to the waist band but what are these ruffle layers and how do you make them?

The ruffles are under the circle layers. You can use cotton material for the circle and would recommend using the matching organza to the top circles on the ruffles. You use a gathered circle (shorter than the top layers) and sew ruffles (gathered strips of fabric with the fishline hem) to that that bottom cirlce. Usually 3 1/2 to 4" in width. If you sew 2 rows of ruffles to the ruffle circle (the bottom circle) you want to sew them seperatly. Versus gathering them and sewing them on to gether, so they don't lay into eachother. This bottom ruffle gives the the top skirt fullness. Hope this helps.

SORRY I JUST REALIZED HOW CONFUSING THIS SOUNDED...LET ME retry.....

The ruffles are under the TOP circle layers. You can use cotton material for the BOTTOM RUFFLE LAYER usually a circle but recommend using the matching organza to the top circles on the ruffles. You use a gathered circle This is the cotton material or other matching colored fabric(shorter than the top layers...Your bottom ruffle circle will be the length of your top cirlces minus the ruffle length ..be sure to remember seam allowances..you want the bottom ruffle to be the same length or just a bit shorter thant he bottom top layer of the skirt) You sew ruffles (gathered strips of fabric with the fishline hem) to that that bottom circle. Usually 3 1/2 to 4" in width. If you sew 2 rows of ruffles to the bottom ruffle circle you want to sew them seperatly. Versus gathering them and sewing them on to gether, so they don't lay into eachother. This bottom ruffle gives the the top skirt fullness. Hope this helps.

Hello,
If anyone knows how to do fishline hem (I think its called, or some may know of it by flounce hem or ruffles)I would really appreciate directions on how to do this. I am doing a long skirt for my Major Work in Textiles and Design for High School and it is a long layered skirt and each layer/tier is flounced/ or ruffled with fishline. I know you pull/stretch the fabric as you sew on a zigzag stitch. But I need to know how to end and start the fishing line? Like do I fold the line and sew over it or what?
Thank you very much

This is a link to a skirt which is similar to what I am making-

Okay in late March/early April a mom ordered a custom made dress from. She paid a small $100 deposit for the dress and paid it out over the next 6 weeks which is 100% fine with me. Well she fell in love with my daughters dress and I explained to her the price of a dress my daughters level of glitz. She did not want to even spend 1/3 that so I told her okay I can do the same style, same material etch and just less stones but still very pretty for her one year old. The order form said she needed it on May 14. All last week she emailed wanting to know what day it was going out and I said Tuesday May 10....she was fine with that. So the day came and I printed the mailing label on paypal and for some reason the post man did not scan it the second she got it so she freaked out and has involved tons of others in her issue. I posted pictures of the dress now she doesnt like, filed against the payment method and all. The dress will be there on the 13th just like we talking about and she says now that her daughter is allergic to a certain texttile. She knew in advance the textile that would be used.

ANYWAYS what can I do? I do not want people thinking that I am a bad person and dont deliever the products on time. Thank you ladies for your time.

Sounds like a scammer to me. I have a feeling what she is trying to to do is to get her money back by filing the paypal claim and then she wont return the dress, so she doesn't pay a dime but gets the dress. Just inform everyone on your page that you did nothing wrong and this lady is just looking for a free dress and problems. After making good quality dresses and shipping them on time why would you suddenly stop doing that? It doesn't make sense

I believe you are right. I am having my attorney look over all the information. I am so glad that I have a contract as that will help witht things need to be esculated. I am hoping that tomorrow you gets the dress and all is well. Maybe I just see the good in every situation. I have yet to defend myself as I dont want to put fuel on the fire as my husband says lol.

Okay I really need help w/ this one. I am trying to sell pageant attire. I opened up an account on FB to get some customers. But the moms there are so CHEAP! One wanted me to make a CUSTOM baby doll dress for 175! Seriously? Some shells cost more than that. There are some good apples in the bunch but the majority of them just want a bargain for something I worked my butt off to make!. And some even called me a scammer becuase I refused to make their kid a dress for dirt cheap. Honestly I'm just so tired of this... Is there anywhere else to sell? Other than consignment boards?? Thanks- rant over!

Thanks again Glenna! I hope I get it right. I'm not sure if I'm using high quality organza, but it's not from Walmart though. I boiled my 30 LB fishing line, the cheap kind, for a bit then I hemmed the skirt. After that I planned to stack my layers and add the waistband. I'm making a size 4-6 skirt. I have 2 half doughnut pieces that I was planning to sew at the sides, and gather at the top. Everything is going well, but it's just the hem that has me going crazy. Anyways, I'm going to try what you told me, thanks again!

Thanks Glenna. I appreciate it. I have a question though, when you make your skirts right after you gather them at the top does the wavy hem start to get really curly like you see in the pictures? I just really want to be sure, ugh I swear I'm about to just give up and walk away on this skirt!

The top layers are not nearly as curly as the slip layers because of the length of fabric and they do tend to curl a little more as they lay. You can also hit them with the steamer and encourage more curl. I don't know what size skirt you are making but for anything bigger than toddler you need to sew several doughnuts together then gather the waist section.

Are you hemming before you stack the layers or after you put the waistband on? It is a pain in the hiney but easier to learn if you hem and gather each individual layer, then, after you are happy with them, stack and add the waistband. That way if you mess up a layer you can replace it. Extra work - but worth it until you figure out what works for you.

One more thing...and please don't take this the wrong way...but, are you using good quality organza? I see people struggle with Wal-Mart organza and while it is okay for practice, there is a big difference in the thread count and it is just limp and flat no matter how hard you work. You can be doing all the steps right and still come out with a bad skirt. You can sometimes get away with using it for the ruffles but not your top layers.

I'm making a cupcake skirt. When I try to do the rolled hem with the fishline it doesn't come out curly enough. It comes out with a slight wave.Any help?

Here are a few things to consider or try. 1. Most of the curl comes from gathering the fabric tightly at the top rather than the actual fishline; 2. Hold the fabric taunt both front and back as you feed it through the serger; and 3. Use the cheapest fish line you can buy. The nice line is too soft.

Does anyone know how Michael Booth makes these things on his dresses? They are kind of the wire swirls but wider and I think they are covered w/ more fabric. Here is a pic

Hi. I'm trying to make the fishline hem on my skirts but I just can't do it right. I have a rolled hem foot and some fishing line with a tight zigzag stitch. Where is the wire suppose to go? And how tight should the stitch be?

Thanks.

I charged this pageant mom 300 for a custom glitz SW that she wants me to make from her design. She thinks this price is too high. I don't think so since it takes a lot of money since the fabric she wants is not locally available to me and I have to order it. The store I also get my supplies from is 2+ miles away and gas is expensive where I live.So all of you know everything adds up. Should I lower the price? I think since this is a good price since there are some some USED SW that have sold for more than 300, but I'm making this for her for 300 and it's custom!
