Rocket seemed about to say something when the vixen dragged herself away. But even to him it was obvious that she could not walk. And she couldn't stay there, that was for sure. If the weather went any worse, she'd not pass a week. When his daughter had contracted the disease it had been easer, because Tawny was just a cub and could be moved along easily. But how could an adult move without walking? Unless he and the son dragged her away. Rocket glanced sideways at the young male fox. He looked quite strong, but even so, it would take a lot of time.
When he mentioned humans, Rocket looked up with bafflement and something close to scorn. He knew the animals in the reserve were under the man's protection, but he had learnt to mistrust men ever since they killed his mate and nearly ripped his tail off. "I wouldn't trust humans to do anything, unless she gets really worse" said the old fox with a snort. "They often don't keep up to their promises, even those few good-natured."
He bristled his grizzled mane a little, before adding "There are two chances. We can drag her to a safer spot for the night, but only if you feel like you can carry weight." his eyes floated a little uncertainly from Traveller to the young vixen. Now he remembered something she had said about the sick one being her mate's mother. Did that meant that the young vixen was pregnant? If so maybe her mate would want to spare her more burdens and leave on their own. After all, they had almost been through a fight. "The alternative is that we go and collect some moss so that she does not sleep on the frozen ground."
He curled his lips in a little snarl at the mention of whether the vixen would recover or not.
"I was older than her when my daughter was infected, and I made it allright. If she doesn't give up, she has as good chances as anyone to survive."
