Subject: Fighting the Hydra

OOC; well guys we will have a tough time with this one.
heres what I am thinking....at least one of us should scout the hydras lair out...while invisible....so we can plan a good attack...we will have to hit it hard and fast....any delay could be awful.

the spells I have are sleep, mage armor any of these I can cast 7 times per day total,Now if the Hydra is only 5 headed the sleep spell can work...but any more heads then that and it wont...so the mage armor adds +4 to ac and I can cast that on anybody...that should help greatly even if you already have a real high ac more never hurts.
I have the spell invisibilty which I can cast 4 times a day..and I plan on..casting that on myself...and getting behind the beast and blasting it with a ray of enfeeblement..I need to roll a ranged attack to hit it..but being invisible and attacking from behind I get great bonus's so I hope I hit it...if I can hit it ,it has a str. of like 17 I could drop its str. way down...like to 11.
So after that I would need some of you to attack and keep its attention off me...so I can try again to blast it...anything lower than 10 str. fo rit and it should have a hard time even moving around. If it does turn on me than Que should make a sneak attack while its back is turned..I think Ray,you should pick some spells to help for the defensive side...or only spells that have a will save...Hydras will saves are only +1 the others are pretty good...You could also become invisible (by me) so you can go around and heal the injured during the battle without being attacked.Guenn also has some good spells I believe..so if all goes well we should have little problem with it...(hehe)
Also.the use of just firing arrows is not good they do little damage...and dont keep it distracted for me..when i am up close to it.

what do you guys think?

Sounds good, Jozan - invisibility is almost a must if we are to get a jump on the creature. However, I think the key is for us to concentrate our attacks well enough take out as many heads as possible in the opening round so that the Hydra has a dimished number of attacks during subsequent rounds. (Since I have Full Plate, I would not be a good candidate for invisibility). If we can take out 2, maybe even 3 heads in the first round, the hydra is pretty much defeated.

I can Bull's Strength 2 of the invisibled attackers (Cade and Sasha?). When it's time to fight, I can get off a Spiritual Weapon and follow-up with my bow. We can concentrate our attacks on 2 of the heads and try to bring them down ASAP (go for a third if we're doing well).

The party now stands in a cavern. It is acorn-shaped and opens gradually to a width of 35’ at the north wall. A pendant, said to belong to Guenniviere, that was found in the mud is the only evidence of passing. Taal and Sasha have informed the party that the pendant is Guenn's most valued possession. Soon after, Taal took possession of it and placed in his pouch for safe keeping.

Using this clue and raw stubbornness, Cadeirin has managed to reveal a secret door. He activates a hidden switch and a large slab of rock slides back within the wall making a loud, twanging rusty spring sound; ending with a deep resonating thud. Before you, now revealed, stands a huge pair of rusty iron doors. On the center of each door there is a symbol of an open hand with palm facing outright. Once removing himself from an unpleasant bath in the murky pool in the corner, Raynor (and the fo-pa of the DM:)determined them to be the symbols of the fallen god of strife, the once dreaded Bane.

Cadeirin watches across the frail bridge to see Hygt lead the other horses away. He shakes his head with a sigh as he scans the area paying careful attention to the cave entrance. He takes a moment looking at the wolf then looks up quickly. “Something is wrong ... Do not enter the cave” he says quickly to the others and continues to scan the area.

The Dragonfeather

Night reigns now as the chill autumn air descends upon the city of Beregost. You are in a recently built inn called the Dragonfeather Tavern. Mostly travelers visit this place. The locals mainly stick to the older, better-established taverns. You can see several merchants mingling with the crowd attempting to solicit money from the overburdened pockets of some adventurers. An older, rather stout barmaid can be seen scrambling through the smoke filled room trying in vain to keep up with the demands of the patrons on this unusually busy night.
You notice the door open and two more travelers push their way in. Judging by the weapons they garnish, you realize that these are adventurers as well. The first one is wearing an olive-green cloak with a hood drawn over his head and the cloak pulled around his body concealing what is underneath. He seems rather short and slender. Though, the composite bow strapped to his back is quite conspicous. His companion is a tall dark-haired man brandishing a well-formed mustache and beard. He looks fairly young, but not naïve. He also is wearing a cloak, though black and pulled back revealing his studded leather armor and clothes underneath. He wears a large claymore on his back and judging by his grim expression, knows how to use it. You can also see, on opposing sides of his body, a crossbow and a short sword. A pair of daggers sheathed and strapped to each calf finishes off his arsenal, or at least what can be seen.
As you observe, the hooded figure approaches the barmaid. After several moments, the large woman nods and smiles. The hooded figure then grasps her arm gently and pats her on the shoulder. He then makes his way to the bar with the large warrior in tow. Upon reaching the bar, the figure turns and regards his companion. He then pulls back his hood and the first thing you see is bright red hair. Then you notice the delicate facial features and realize that the small slender warrior is no man. She shakes her head and long, fiery red hair spills over her shoulders. She cracks a sly smile at her companion, then hurls herself up on the bar. Standing straight she places two fingers to her mouth and lets out and ear-piercing whistle. The whole tavern grows silent and lends their attention to the lady. You can see in her pale blue eyes and by her smirk that she is a spirited woman. She then begins speaking.
"Well met good people. I am in dire need of brave hearted adventurers who are willing to leave this place at dawn to face great dangers in order to save a life." Her face grows serious and even a bit desperate as she sighs slightly, "I'm afraid I have no payment to offer in advance. Though…"
The remainder of her sentence is lost in the rumbling of the patrons who seem upset for having their time wasted. Again, you hear an ear-piercing whistle and the patrons; many irritably, once again give the lady attention.
"Please let me finish," she pleaded, "As I said, I have no payment in advance. I can promise…" She stops as she looks down to find a hand groping her leg. She traces the arm to find the drunken glassy-eyed face of a young adventurer.
"I bet you've got plenty to give," he says with a huge grin on his face.
He is promptly rewarded with her boot in his face. The man falls back off of his stool and thuds to the ground with blood pouring out of his newly reformed nose. Before his companion seated beside the fallen man could rise from his stool, he finds himself pinned between the stool and the bar, held fast by the much larger foot of the woman's companion. This hold however is not held long as __ more people stand from seats nearby and rush into the fray. You see a warrior with his sword drawn and shield raised attacking the tall warrior. You also see what looks like a priest run into the battle. Further back, standing in the corner, you see a younger man dressed in purple and blue robes chanting in what you assume to be the arcane language. The crowd parts and watches.
Are their any good-hearted patrons who would aid the two helplessly outnumbered adventurers in their struggles?

It seems like the 3e was designed with miniatures in mind. Will we be using miniatures? Without it its hard to use things like flank and attacks of opportunity, which seems pretty important for the entire combat system...

Ok, here is an update of who we have playing and who is questionable. I've had a large response suddenly and I'm trying to do this on a first come first serve basis. Sorry, but I can't have any more than 6 players for now. More than 6 would slow things down too much. Especially since this is my first time DM'ing on-line, though I've spent most of my off-line DnD time DM'ing which stems back to 1st edition. Here's the list

Definite:
AnvilX: Elven Ranger
Gord: Sorcerer? not confirmed
Jeff: Monk? I think:)
Kaan: Rogue of some sort

Probable:
Mertaf: unknown

Questionable:
Jayme: unknown
Lee: unknown
Melinda: unknown
Mike: unknown

Some may see some unfamiliar names on this list. These are newcomers and are welcomed

Unless Kaan wants to continue his campaign, we will begin on Wednesday Nights at 8PM eastern time and run the usual 3 hours or so. As you can see, there is only one spot that appears to be open. The first to reply to this mail will be number 6. For those who can't make my campaign, I hear Gord is also planning to run one, so there will be room for players there. Keep an eye out for DM's since they seem to be few and far between now.

I'm beginning a new 3Ecampaign within a month or two. I'm looking for between 4 and 6 players. I'm planning on running it whenever no one else is for now. Since the idea for swing shift DM's seems to be popular, I figured I'd jump on in. Though I'm planning for a long running campaign, it will be divisible into smaller adventures (but not real small). Let's assume for now that the setting will take place in FR. As much as I love a good scrap, this is not going to be just hack and slash. I will try to provide a good balance between them, but I expect players to role-play. Whoever is interested, just reply to this e-mail or post a message on the board (when I get it posted) . If you could, try and give me an idea of what you want to play, so I can build my story around you. This does not have to be written in stone. Please do not be overly concerned about a balanced party. Play what you want to play. Though try and aim for a little variety. We don't want a party full of fighters or anything of that nature. I will provide more details to whoever is interested. The sooner I have character information, the sooner I can start. Be warned! This is not a campaign for the weak-hearted. The danger presented to your characters will be very real. Thus, some may die.

All characters will start with 30 pts. using the buy system as in Kaan's game. Distribute the points as you would normally. Once you are finished, add 1 more to any ability point (preferrably one pertaining to your class). That is what you will need to begin. Now let me explain what I have in mind.

The only thing I'm really doing is giving more ability point bonuses. Your character will gain an additional ability point each level for the first 4 consecutive levels. They will gain one at 6th level and continue normally from then on. The bonus ability points that I have added (Levels 1,2,3,6) cannot be used to go above 18 +or- your racial bonus for that ability. Therefore, if you're playing a half-orc, you can go up to 20 in strength, but max at 16 in Intelligence and Charisma. This applies only to the bonuses that I have added. The others can go higher as dictated by the PHB.

When your character is completed, please e-mail them to me (fender21228@lycos.com) and specify which ability you added your level 1 bonus to, so I don't have to spend time trying to figure out how you came up with your numbers. Any questions, feel free to ask. And yes, I did spend time playing with the numbers to make sure that It's not too high powered. Most players will be starting in the 75-79 total ability points range. My advice to you is to plan for the future. I like the point buy system because it adds variety, but it requires more planning for you characters from the beginning. Again, feel free to ask any questions. Cya
