and I really don't have an answer for "why Helmut and not Alec".

well, I do, but it's a politically incorrect one. Laziness. Reliance on fanon rather than canon.

When you look at the length of time that LFN fic has been going, I think it's inevitable that fanon overtakes canon at times. (Heh. Look at HP and Cassie Claire and leather-wearing-Draco for fanon over canon) So because a certain amount of writers - or, dare I say it? A certain *quality* of writers - have used Elena, or Helmut or Jurgen or Suba in this fashion, it becomes almost second nature for other writers to slip into the same usage.

Hm. As I'm writing this, I'm rethinking the "laziness" comment. We're all playing in the same sandbox, after all, and it's just so easy to absorb a fanon-based interpretation of the characters, heroes or villians.

Certainly something to consider the next time I'm playing with one of my stories! I also think I need to invest in the DVDs - at least S1 and S2 - and refresh my imagination with the source material, as opposed to fannish versions I've read in the past several years.
